Cool fall weather means wild persimmons are ripe and falling, so it’s time for the official Persimmon Hill Farm Persimmon Seed Winter Weather Forecast!
The seeds have spoken: They have spoons, so the prediction is snow!
According to folklore, the split seeds of a fully ripe persimmon indicate the weather for the coming winter: a fork shape indicates a mild winter with light, fluffy snow; a knife shape foretells cold, icy winds that cut like a knife; and a spoon predicts a winter with heavy snow to shovel.
To be sure, we checked 50 seeds, and found 48 showed spoons and two showed skinny knives, so maybe some icy winds are coming too.
Persimmons are useful little fruits. (They are botanically classified as berries, so no surprise they find a home on our berry farm.) We harvest buckets of them for our Persimmon Butter. So get ready for winter and stock up on Persimmon Butter for your biscuits on those cold mornings and stay warm!
