Greenhill Peeps & Poults

Greenhill Peeps & Poults I am a small poultry breeder in Lancaster PA Blue Slate & Lavender Turkey, and barnyard mix chickens I'm located in Lancaster PA. i do not breed mean!

I'm a small breeder of heritage turkeys in the Blue Slate, as well as Lavender variety. The Blue Slate will occasionally hatch Spanish Black and on a rare occasion white poults. Any chickens i breed, as of 2023, will now be straight-run barnyard mixes. My roo is a massive and crazy friendly F1 Olive egger. His hens are olive egger, easter egger (with muffs), cream legbar, and black copper marans.

Know your area's rules for having Roosters or Tom turkeys. All of my male turkeys and roosters are friendly. Due to biosecurity of my flocks, I do NOT take back unwanted chickens or turkeys. I have a two chick/poult minimum. A single chick is NEVER a good idea (with poults its worse) and it will likely pass away. IF you can prove you have a brooder with similar age chicks/poults currently, I will make an exception. I do not let chicks go until I know they are eating, drinking and thriving. This means they remain in my care for at least 2-4 days after hatch. Turkey poults are kept a little longer so they pass the delicate stage. I guarantee chicks/poults are healthy and thriving at the time of meeting. I do not guarantee them once they leave my care. It is your responsibility to look over the poultry before leaving the pick-up site. I do not have any adult chickens or turkeys available. I do occasionally grow some up and sell as juvenile when fully feathered and able to be outside. If this interests you, let me know. Understand that if I spend my time and resources to grow them up, they will be more expensive. Meetings are Fri-Sun due to my work schedule. I am willing to work with people on meeting places, but it must be in Lancaster PA.

Umm Yeah ... my chickens roost 9ft up in a tree. I look straight at them when in my house or on my deck, 9ft up. Love my goofy chickens ❤️

So excited! I got 12 Ayam Camani hatching eggs. 10 hatched today! Of the 32 barnyard mix eggs (12 purchased) all but 4 hatched. Add to that the pullet chicks I've gotten from TSC... I have a LOT of chicks. 🤦‍♀️
My goal is to raise them up, w**d out roosters, pick what I want, and then offer young birds to people who don't want to deal with a brooder... chickens that are healthy and can be put outside.

My favorite time! I set them so they'd hatch when I was home. I need a pick-me-up. Nothing like watching a chick hatch ... or hear an egg peeping before it's even cracked. 🥰🐣

44 eggs set. Pipping started today, right on time. Most are barnyard mixes... I love these chickens! They're hardy, friendly, good egg layers, and easy to tell apart. Hatching is exciting because you never know what color will pop out!

There are 12 very special eggs in this batch, and some have already pipped. I splurged this year and got Ayam Cemani hatching eggs. 🤩

Stop the insanity!
Don't get chickens to save money. Don't do it! You will NOT save any money at all. In fact your first eggs will be worth their weight in gold.

Absolutely DO get chickens because you WANT them, their comedy relief, you don't mind the work, stink and flies, and want amazing fresh eggs... not FREE eggs.

Lets break this down... here's what you save by getting those cute little chicks so you can have free eggs.

💰You buy chicks, PA state law says a minimum of 4 if you get from retail.
💰'straight run' means unsexed. Expect the potential for all to be roosters, but you won't know that for 3+ months
💰Now you need a brooder lamp, bulb, brooder, bedding, feeder, waterer, feed.
💰You spend more in electricity to keep the chicks warm for 2+ months...they cant go out until fully feathered.
💰Now you need a coop and nest boxes ... even cheap ones aren't cheap.
💰larger feeders and waterers because you likely got the small ones for the brooder
💰Predator proof? Larger protected run? More $$
💰Free range? More $$ to replace the ones that disappear...and start over.
💰fly control... oh the flies will drive you mad
💰You won't see eggs for 6 months (some breeds are a little earlier). By then it will get cold.
💰Chickens stop laying eggs when its too cold, moulting, too hot, and slow down with less daylight. But you keep feeding and caring for them.
🥶and don't forget you have to feed/water and care for them no matter what weather is throwing at you

It's been a long couple of weeks. I absolutely love sitting outside with my geese. They're so happy, and the goose zoomies make me smile! After the bath and zoomies... its nap time.

If you have the room, neighbors don't mind the honking ... which is not constant ... i say get some geese! They're our lawnmowers. We only had to mow 3 times this season. We've reduced our carbon footprint and use of fossil fuels. Win-win!

Oh jeez... i have a hen going through a seriously hard molt! Poor girl.

When this happens, they get tuna, peas, higher protein food, and olive oil drizzled over.

Predators have been really bad here this year. We have tons of predators around but they've pretty much left us alone until a month or 2 ago. I've lost ducks, goslings, and chickens. I've run some serious electric fence, reinforced fencing, and the massacres seem to have stopped for now.

I'm devastated. Last weekend we went away and a fox got my silkie roo Fabio, my head rooster Chief, and my favorite rooster Nelson. I found where he got in and hopefully fixed it. I still have an amazing rooster remaining (Rosco my Bielefelder), but now to start building my flock back up and putting up more predator deterrents.
