You’ve picked berries here. You’ve picked flowers here. Now come spend an evening with us. 🌿✨

On Thursday, September 17, The Ivy Place will host Art & Soul, an evening of great food, live art, big band music and community—all in support of the Lancaster County Council of the Arts.

🥂 Start the evening with a Cocktail Garden Party featuring signature drinks, hors d’oeuvres and three local artists creating original works right in front of you.

🍽️ Gather around the table for a family-style dinner from Roots Catering.

🎨 Meet the artists and watch their paintings come to life throughout the evening.

🎺 Then stay awhile as the StarDusters Big Band fills the night with swing, jazz and classic dance music.

And it all happens here at The Ivy Place.

If you’ve followed us for berries, flowers, weddings or simply because you love this little corner of Lancaster County, this is a chance to experience the property in a completely different way.

Come with friends. Enjoy a great meal. Listen to some incredible music. Maybe even dance a little.

Most importantly, your evening helps support arts education, exhibitions, classes, public art, festivals, accessibility programs and the creative community throughout Lancaster County.

🚜 What are we doing on the farm today?

Cleaning up after pruning the blueberry bushes.

The first tractor pushes the pruned branches into the row, making them easier to collect. Then we bring in the forks to gather everything up and haul it to the burn pile.

Every season has its work behind the scenes. This is what helps make those summer mornings filled with fresh blueberries possible. 🫐

🌿 What are we doing on the farm today? Pruning blueberries!

After fruit is done, we spend time shaping our blueberry bushes for next year’s crop. We do at this time to get some growth before winter. Winter pruning is also very acceptable.

For these tall varieties, we’re cutting the bushes back to a manageable height and creating more open space. Don’t be afraid to remove branches! Our goal is to develop strong, layered branches throughout the plant.

Why? Because an open bush:
🫐 Lets more sunlight reach the blooms and developing berries.
🫐 Improves air circulation for healthier plants.
🫐 Makes it much easier to spot and pick ripe blueberries from every part of the bush.

Big pruning now means healthier plants, better berry production, and a more enjoyable picking experience next season.

We will show smaller varieties and go more technical on what to cut in the next videos.

What are we doing on the farm today? Pruning blackberries! 🌿

Blackberry canes have a two-year life cycle. The primocanes grow during the first year, then become floricanes and produce fruit during the second year.

Once those floricanes finish fruiting, we cut them out and leave the healthy primocanes to grow and produce next season’s blackberry crop.

If you bought blackberry plants from us last year, take five minutes and do this now. A little pruning today will help set you up for plenty of sweet blackberries next summer!
