Cleanup of orchard from July 4th storm continues. Today two large trees that fell across orchard fence from neighboring properties and destroyed trees were cut up and removed.
Fifteen year old Captain Kidd, 30 year old Cortland, 20÷ year old Pixie Crunch. Baker's Delight, and Royal Empire are gone. Two sour cherry trees were damaged but hopefully can't be salvaged. Two pawpaw trees - Tallahatchie and Maria's Joy, somehow survived with little damage. A full size Allegheny pawpaw tree is still buried under debris from a tree we still haven't gotten to.

Nice Potomac pawpaw knocked off tree by July 4th storm. Would have been a honker.

Yesterday was orchard clean up day. Three truck loads of pruned branched and limbs cleaned up and taken to composting park. Nice load of apple wood for smoking. Orchard is now ready to go.

Today Back Yard Fruit Growers held its annual Grafting Workshop at the Mt. Wilson Church of the Brethren near Lebanon. PA. More than 200 cultivars of apples, 50 varieties of pears, pawpaws, plums. and other fruit varieties were available to BYFG members and the public. Apple pear, and plum rootstocks were available for purchase at a nominal cost. Veteran instructors demonstrated and explained the art of bench grafting a scion of a desired variety onto a root stock to create a custom fruit tree. This is one of the largest events of its type in the Mid-Atlantic area if not the Eastern U.S. Apple varieties I picked up to graft include Chesapeake, Victoria Limbertwig, and Monty's Surprise
I will follow up with grafting pictures in a couple weeks.
