Why do I make Angela breakfast each day?
Well first off this isn’t a brag- I’m just as flawed and imperfect as anyone.
It’s a way to spend time together, show appreciation and actually eat something worthwhile!
Lifetimes and memories are not generated in great flashes and events but mostly in subtle day to day interactions.

Hopefully this encourages you guys to share more meals together.

Feeding the Wife: Duck and mushhrooms

Tonight’s dinner started in our own backyard. Fresh Muscovy duck from birds we’ve been raising for the last three months, butchered here and seared like a steak.
On the side, fresh hen of the woods mushrooms, seared in a hot pan with garlic and thyme, plus peas to round it out.

This is not an AI image. I actually spent a completely reasonable amount of time sticking googly eyes into an okra pod to make an okra slug.

The reason is that once okra cooks, it releases that thick, slippery mucilage, so making curry with it starts to look a little like preparing a pot of curried slugs. 🐌
Fortunately, the slime is actually one of the useful parts. Okra mucilage contains soluble fiber, which absorbs water and forms a gel-like material in the digestive tract. That can help support normal bowel function, slow digestion somewhat, and contribute to the fermentation substrate used by beneficial gut bacteria.

So yes, it looks like slug slime. It is also perfectly edible, nutritionally useful, and in a good curry, actually pretty tasty.

Well, look at us. We’ve finally entered the 1990s and built ourselves a website. Only about 30 years behind the curve.

This flowering plant is okra. I grow it in my garden every year for two reasons: I really enjoy the flowers, and for some reason I also like the disgusting, weird, slimy goop you can make with the okra pods.

The flowers look like small hibiscus blooms, which makes sense since they’re related. When you have an entire row or two of these tall plants blooming throughout the season and constantly producing pods, they make a really nice addition to the garden.

FYI: That weird slimy goop in okra is largely mucilage, a soluble fiber that can help support normal digestion and beneficial gut bacteria.
