Meadowset Farm & Apiary, LLC

Meadowset Farm & Apiary, LLC Meadowset Farm is a small family farm in southern Chester County practicing sustainable farming.

Our current focus is on our bee yard and grass-fed lamb available year-round. Breeding stock of East-Friesian-Lacaune dairy ewes upon request. From the Swiss Alps to the fields of Pennsylvania, Meadowset Farm is a small 25 acre family farm in the heart of southeastern Chester County. The farm is run by Barbara and Thomas, two large animal veterinarians, their daughters. Libby and Annie, the Bullma

stiffs; 12 cats, chickens, honeybees and peafowl complete the tenants on this 250+ year old farm. We run a grass-based licensed sheep dairy with East Friesland and Lacaune milksheep, following old-world cheese making practices. The 30 plus colonies of honeybees produce honey, pollen, propolis and beeswax. We consider it a privilege to carry on the tradition of farming at Meadowset Farm. By practicing sustainability we strive not only to be good farmers, but also to become stewards of the land for those who will farm here after us. "Our land is not a gift from our parents, but a loan from our children."

Heinrich Storch was a beekeeper and professor of apiculture in Marburg, Germany. He wrote the book “Am Flugloch / At the Entrancehole”. It was one of the first books I read when I started with bees in the 80ies. There is lot to learn from the activity at the entrance hole, including if a hive is “queen-right” etc. by sitting in front of the colonies observing the activity. Often, there is no need to open the hive and create disruption when all the info is right there …. 😉. It is a lot about intuition based on what I observe, almost like working up a sick patient.

The philosophy behind beekeeping is a delicate dance between humility and understanding, a sacred act that illustrates the interdependence of all living things. Beekeeping is essentially more than just harvesting honey and maintaining hives, it's about learning to patiently and respectfully listen to the bees.
This exercise invites us to slow down, focus, and recognize the bees' nonverbal language, which communicates through vibrations and energy instead of words.

It would be wrong not to share the buzzing excitement happening in our bee yard today….

Quick hive check and adding some pollen patties for strong colonies to split later in spring. Out of 18 colonies going into winter, 2 losses. The rest is strong and on 5-6 deep frames over 2 brood boxes. They are buzzing 🤪!
