The garage is looking ... Hemken-like. Melissa is lucky to have family mechanics! A huge SHOUT OUT to her dad Steve and brother Nathan for keeping the wheels turning on the old Mercedes that, mostly due to farmers market commutes, now has over 420,000 miles on it. This summer, as Iowan farmers, Steve and Nathan set Melissahof up with its first tractor that has all the things needed to keep up with the chickens and garlic. THANK YOU to Nathan, wife Abbie and kids for hauling the tractor out to Wyoming on a family visit!

Turning w**ds into food! The cattle have joined the chickens in eating the w**ds in the garlic field in preparation to plant garlic in October. The digestive system of cattle, similar to sheep and goats, grinds up seeds. This prevents w**d seeds from passing through the digestive track and landing in the animals’ cowpie as whole seeds ready to sprout in a pile of rich fertilizer.

🐾 Esther here. Melissa said today is the Day of the Dogs. A lot is said of the chickens and garlic around here, but nothing on the farm happens without the supervision of me and Trudy. Such as last week’s rubber ducky race on the irrigation ditch with Melissa’s niece and nephews. The photographic evidence attests that we dogs were attentive race stewards!

The rooster meatbirds move through the garlic field to eat insect pests and w**d seeds. In this way, protein food is created while prepping to grow food plants.

Q: How can I identify the gender of young chickens?
A: Teenage chickens can be sexed by their saddle feathers, combs and wattles.

Pullets, female chickens that have yet to ovulate and lay an egg, have rounded saddle feathers. Roosters - male chickens - have pointed saddle feathers. Located on a chicken's lower back just in front of the tail, saddle feathers are where the wing tips rest. Pointed saddle feathers on juvenile roosters begin to grow in at about 10 weeks of age.

Roosters grow larger combs and wattles, and as juveniles more quickly form them than the pullets.

These juvenile Blue-laced Red Wyandottes were photographed at night, because the calmest, easiest way to catch chickens is when they're asleep after dark.

On Melissahof, pastured poultry provide organic control of pests & w**ds in the garlic field in late summer after the garlic harvest. Chickens create food while serving the agroecological system.

Pastured poultry move frequently to fresh pasture in mobile coops to ensure the chickens and ducks live on green grass. Melissahof chicken and eggs are certified grass-fed by the American Grassfed Association and a member of the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association.
