Thank you so much to everyone that stopped by the farm to celebrate Earth Day with us this past Sunday! 🌍 Our crew was so excited to work alongside you + share what we’ve learned about climate resilience. Getting to see you all made our hearts SO happy 😊

Happy Earth Day!! To celebrate, we want to share with you what climate-smart adaptations our crew chose to implement on our farm:
🌱A commitment to eliminating bare soil
💧Implementation of water catchment systems to assist in dry spells
🌳Planting perennials in areas of high flood-risk
💡Securing backup generator to continue irrigating during power outages

Plans are underway at the LEAF farm!

If you’ve been following our climate-change initiative, you know that LEAF is working towards developing both a climate-resilient system and a curious youth crew who are undaunted by unpredictable conditions. After some workshops on climate science and potential adaptations to boost operational resilience, the youth crew performed a SWOT of the LEAF Farm (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats).

This SWOT assessed that our soil-health practices, efficient irrigation, and crop diversity are strong – but there is room to grow regarding our bare soil exposure, heat stress on crops, and flooding risks. Utilizing this valuable information, the crew discussed what strategies would work most effectively to boost our climate resilience. The farmhouse was alight with excitement from our crew as we dreamed about how a climate-resilient LEAF would look 😃

Curious about what a “workshop” is? A member of our youth crew, Abulkhassim, wants to take you along during one! 😄

Workshops are lessons taught by our staff members every Sunday during the school year, and once a day during our summer program. In these workshops, youth learn about various topics ranging from valuable farm lessons, tasty culinary demos, out-of-the-box outreach exercises, and inspiring identity explorations.

This workshop delved deeper into a question that persists among our crew: how can LEAF respond to climate change? In it, the youth split into smaller groups to determine which resources (such as generators and water collection systems) we should consider to become the most climate resilient – then debated the positives and drawbacks of each addition! Stay tuned to find out which resources were included in our final plan… 👀

Just like everyone else, we’ve been thinking a lot about climate change 🌎 As we head into our Earth Day Party this Sunday (https://www.leafprojectpa.org/new-events-1/earthdayparty), we’ll be sharing the steps we’ve taken this winter + spring to build a more climate-resilient farm!

To kick things off, our crew learned from a panel of experienced growers about how shifting seasons, unpredictable weather, and extreme conditions are impacting farms - and the importance of caring for both land and people through it all.

This panel included Jeff Frank of Liberty Gardens, Marty Renner of Down to Earth Harvest, Kirstie Jones of Pennypack Farm, Trey Fleming of Two Gander Farm, and Liz Krug of Endless Roots Farm.

One big takeaway from these farmers? Climate change is challenging, but it’s also an opportunity to innovate, adapt, and grow stronger.
