The history of Keany Produce is a classic story of tradition, American family business. Forty years ago, a young man, encouraged by his father, started selling produce from the back of a van. He had limited experience in the produce business, but he followed his father’s advice, “If you focus on high-quality food and honest dealings with your customers, you will always be successful.”
Kevin Keany started the Keany Produce Company in 1978 with a single small warehouse in the Washington, D.C. area. Starting well before dawn each day and working late into the afternoon, Kevin brought a spirit of personal attention, honesty, and integrity to his fledging enterprise. Combined with the best quality produce he could offer, his one-man business flourished. He sourced local produce by establishing and cultivating valuable relationships with several farmers within the metro-DC area. He also detected a solution to combat rising labor costs in the restaurant industry—five years after the company’s launch, the pre-cut operations began. As the business grew, Kevin’s brothers, Chris, Dan, and Ted, joined in the effort while their father, Patrick Keany, continued his support.

Today, Keany Produce & Gourmet is still a family-owned business with each of the brothers taking an active role in the day-to-day operations and overall future company planning. Keany is currently partnered with over 40 local farmers spanning from New Jersey to North Carolina to offer the area’s most extensive local distribution program. With two state-of-the-art warehouse facilities, in Landover, Maryland and Richmond, Virginia, Keany is able to deliver to our customers six days a week. In keeping with their emphasis on strong work ethic and commitment to customer service, each member of the Keany sales and management team is handpicked for quality, experience, and commitment to customer service.
