Sarah Real learned to brew on a literal hot plate.
Before Hot Plate Brewing (Hot Plate Brewing Co.) existed, she and her husband Mike were living in a Brooklyn apartment with the gas shut off. No stove, no real setup. Just a hot plate, and a refusal to give up on the idea. That’s where the name comes from. Today she’s owner and head brewer, and by most counts the only Latina-owned brewery in Massachusetts. Last year, USA Today readers voted Hot Plate one of the best new breweries in the country.
Tonight she’s pouring alongside Las Cocineras Latinas: five women, five food businesses, one cooperative started a few miles from here in Pittsfield. Different industries, same story. They looked around, didn’t see themselves reflected, and opened up shop anyway.
On the table tonight: Nubia’s patacón entero, piled with beef or chicken, cheese, and pico de gallo. Pernil and arroz con gandules. Tres leches and flan for dessert.
5–7:30pm at the store. Tables and chairs are out, or grab a spot on the lawn. Just show up.

TODAY, something a little unusual is going to happen in front of the store.

The American Travelling Morrice — a touring group of Morris dancers and musicians — will be performing right out front from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m.

Bells strapped to the legs, handkerchiefs, sticks clashing together, a fiddle and accordion keeping time. There's usually a "Fool" character working the crowd. It's loud, it's funny, and if you've never seen Morris dancing before, it's genuinely strange in the best way.

This particular troupe has been doing this every summer since 1976 — dancers and musicians flying in from teams across the US, England, and Canada to reunite for one week, hitting unlikely spots like farmers markets, Grand Central Terminal, and the White House lawn. This year's route runs through Columbia County, NY, Berkshire County, and Litchfield County, CT, and today we're on it.

10:15 to 10:45 a.m., Today 8/11, right out front at 60 Williamstown Road. It starts promptly and it's only 30 minutes, so don't wander in late. Good for kids, good for anyone who likes a little chaos with their morning coffee.

Hundreds of plants left. Everything 25% off through Sunday, May 31.

Tomatoes: Brandywine, Sun Gold, Striped German, Cherokee Purple, Matt's Wild Cherry, Valencia, German Johnson, and a few others.

Peppers: Carmen, Escamillo, Poblano, Jalapeño, Cayenne, Hungarian Hot Wax, plus bell varieties.

Also: cucumbers, Mexican Gherkin, cauliflower, cabbage, basil, parsley, flowers.

The hanging baskets are worth a look — cascading flowers and tumbling tomatoes that do well on a porch or balcony.

Organic seeds, bagged compost, and potting soil are also on sale.

Late May is still good planting time, but at this price these will move.

Open 10–6 Monday through Saturday, 10–4 Sunday.

We’re in the Berkshire Eagle this week. The piece looks at how the North Adams Farmers Market helped four businesses — us, Door Prize, Steeple City Social, and Hexagon Bagels — build the trust and customer base to open storefronts. The NAFM has been part of our story for a long time. It’s nice to see it get some credit.

There’s nothing like a fresh sourdough baguette.

Last Saturday, the bread moved fast. A few customers came back for a second loaf. That’s usually the sign.

If you want bread waiting for you this weekend, preorder.
