I took down our above ground swimming pool today. All summer, the ducks tried to think of a way to get in the pool. Thankfully, ducks are not very bright. It was worth their happiness to let them enjoy the last few inches of water ❤️

The new farmstand is up and running! I will sell eggs, seasonal produce, and crafty things. Selection will be a bit random to start, as fruit trees grow big enough to produce, and I learn how to manage the summer droughts. Right now the mini pumpkins and spaghetti squash are going fast, and I added potatoes today. So excited!

A formerly beautiful heirloom pumpkin I was growing for this fall. I planted outside the fence and the plant decided to grow into the yard. I guess this kind of seed is extra delicious, as the chickens have completely hollowed it out!

A post about our amazing Amelia. Amelia is an White Old English Game Bantam (a mini chicken) that we grabbed from a backyard chickener who was overwhelmed with her chickens. Amelia was our first ever hen to go broody and hatch chicks. She was an amazing mom!

This year, she went broody right at a time when we had no rooster, so no chicken eggs that would hatch. Amelia is so small that I couldn’t put duck eggs under her, one would have been too large of a challenge!

In a win win, a local farm had a mama hen hatch chicks and one hatched three days later than the rest. The new chick couldn’t keep up with the older chicks and the mama didn’t stop to take care of it. We rushed over, cuddled the still damp tiny chick on the drive back home, and stuck it under Amelia. She knew just what to do! Now the chick is about a week old and they are having grand adventures in the yard, with Amelia fiercely protecting her adopted baby ❤️

I upgraded the ducklings from a sipping waterer to a bowl of water this morning. They are delighted!

We have been busy with our County Fair and ran a duckling hatching exhibit at the fair. These are all Swedish ducklings (although the two with striped faces should not have stripes, that may need some answers) which come in three colors. Eight of twelve eggs hatched during the fair. Now they are a week and a half old and growing fast!

And then they were gone. The baby peachicks had been doing great, but when we sat down to dinner last night two were gasping in distress. They died in our hands and the third followed soon after. I will look at whether a necropsy is an option so we can maybe find some answers, but it will probably only make the guilt and sadness we feel worse, because we missed something or did something wrong and can’t fix it. Farm life is ... hard.

I moved the baby peachicks into a dog crate today for more room to grow and practice flying. They have been doing great! While taking the video, one got very sassy and I’m wondering if it is a little boy ❤️

Baby peachicks continue to do well today! They prefer to be hand fed which is more “needy” than chicken chicks but incredibly cute. We are done at three babies, the remaining eggs showed no signs of life and have been composted.

Baby peachicks moved into their brooder this morning, all three are looking great! Three eggs still in the incubator, but no signs of hatching from them so not expecting more

We have newly hatched baby peacocks! We got the eggs for free under a “baby share” agreement, not sure yet how many will hatch and how many we get to keep. Two are fully out, one is working on it, and hopefully a few more join the party!

A shout out to our two current mama hens, Scratchy and Trio! We are just fine when a hen decides she wants to raise chicks, which is called “going broody” in the poultry world. Scratchy and Trio wanted the same nest, so they co-cared for the eggs. Unfortunately when the five chicks hatched, both wanted all the babies for herself, so we had to separate them. Scratchy takes her two chicks out and about with the flock, but Trio is so protective of her three chicks that she has to be kept separate for now
