Well… this is what happens when the beekeeper is just a little behind on her to-do list. 🐝🌳

This isn’t a wild swarm that moved in. These are our own bees, and they decided they were ready to expand before I got around to splitting the hive.

A swarm is how a healthy colony reproduces. The old queen leaves with about half the bees while a new queen stays behind to take over the original hive. It looks dramatic, but it’s actually one of the calmest times in a bee’s life.

Swarming bees are focused on finding a new home, not on people. They’ve filled up on honey for the journey and are generally very passive while scout bees search the neighborhood for the perfect address.

Fortunately, this bunch picked our persimmon tree, so their commute home is going to be very short. I’ll collect them, settle them into a new hive, and promise them I’ll do a better job staying ahead of their real estate ambitions next spring. 🍯

Memorial Day weekend around the farm may mean BBQs and summer kickoffs for some, but the girls are running business as usual. 🐝🍯

They’re cleaning up old brood frames with a little honey left behind because not a drop goes to waste around here. Everything is buzzing, every worker is on task, and apparently the hive has a strict no holiday weekends during nectar season policy.

Friendly reminder that bumble bees are just flying teddy bears who vibrate loudly and crash into flowers for a living, and today — World Bee Day — I watched them do exactly that on my rhododendrons for an embarrassing amount of time instead of doing my actual job. As a professional beekeeper I feel I should be more dignified about this. I am not. 🐝🌸

There’s a new set of license plates buzzing around Whidbey 🐝

We’re excited to finally have our Protect Our Pollinators plates for our mini-truck, supporting the Washington State Beekeepers Association and the tiny workers who keep everything growing. These plates help fund efforts to protect pollinators from pesticides and herbicides, and support research to combat invasive species, mites, and diseases that can devastate bee populations.

It’s a small thing that does a lot of good—for bees, butterflies, and all the pollinators we depend on.

If you spot us out and about, give us a wave.
