Update & Call to Action on the Farmstand Bill (HB 4153):
Unfortunately, I wish had better news: This week the House Committee on Agriculture, Land Use, Natural Resources, and Water had a work session and voted to move HB4153 forward out of committee, despite the fact that 70% of the testimony they received was in opposition to the bill.

(An amazing sidenote here: over 30% of that opposition came from the Southcoast! Of the 1,113 testimonies in opposition to the bill, 344 came from all of YOU here in our rural corner of the state. Opponents of the bill are hoping you will take urgent action again, so please read on….)

Surprisingly (and unfortunately), the bill was moved directly to the Joint Ways and Means Committee, strategically bypassing the Senate Natural Resource and Environment Committee where it would have faced pushback. If it passes Ways and Means it will move directly to the House and the Senate for a floor vote, which could happen quickly. Currently, the Governor supports this bill - because she’s mostly heard from supporters – so now’s the time to share our concerns and convince her not to sign it into law.

Right now we need as many people as possible to reach out directly to members of the Joint Ways and Means Committee, as well as the Governor’s office, and to do so ASAP.

To take action, visit https://www.valleyflorafarm.com/node/19798 for more info. We need to contact legislators this week via email and phone so we’ve made it easy for you to copy & paste addresses and have provided key talking points.

Thanks so much for jumping back into the ring. You’ve gotten Salem’s attention once already on HB 4153, let’s do it again!

Our little community might be small, but dang if it ain’t MIGHTY!

Close to 1000 testimonies have been submitted about HB 4153, the “Farm Store” bill. That’s a lot of Oregonians voicing their opinion. So far over 62% are in opposition and most strikingly, a very large number of those are from the Southcoast: Gold Beach, Port Orford, Langlois, Bandon, Coos Bay, Coquille. Our peeps!

Thank you so much for springing into action - swiftly and in amazing numbers - to oppose this bill! It’s making a difference in Salem.

So much so that our state Senator and bill co-sponsor, David Brock Smith, reached out yesterday in hopes of changing my mind about HB 4153 (and yours as well). But the more I’ve learned about HB 4153 the more it’s clear: while the bill would benefit some large-scale agritourism operations who want to expand their music venue or sell more donuts, it would simultaneously kill most of our local, family-run farmstands. It could also inadvertently drive up the price of farmland as big parcels are purchased primarily for lucrative agritourism enterprises rather than production of food, fiber and forage.

Sen. Brock Smith insisted that this bill would help Valley Flora because we’re big enough to meet the acreage/sales requirements specified in the bill. But the fact is, it’d be at the expense of our farming friends and neighbors and that’s simply not OK. We’re in this to build a strong food system on the Southcoast - to grow real food for real families - and we’re driven by a set of core values: to tend the land and feed our community with care, and to make the world a healthier, more connected, resilient, just and vibrant place. The more of us who share that ethos - farmers and eaters alike - the more the vision becomes real. We’re stronger together.
So no, we do not want to benefit from a bill that will put other small farmers out of business. And no, we do not support a bill that will undermine the visionary land use laws that have protected and supported Oregon agriculture for over 50 years. HB 4153 is not the answer. You have until 1 pmFriday, 2/6, to submit testimony if you haven’t already: https://www.valleyflorafarm.com/node/19797. Thank you!

Action Alert! Save our Farmstands!

Do you love coming up Floras Creek to pick strawberries in the summer and get veggies from the Valley Flora Farmstand? Do you look forward to fresh bagels, organic produce and eggs from Hartnell Haven Farm each week? Do you rely on Wildwood Gypsy’s raw milk, baked goods, and fresh produce?

We love these thriving little hubs of our local food system - and we know many of you do, too - but they are suddenly under threat by a new bill (HB 4153) being considered by the Oregon legislature. The bill would limit who can operate a farmstand based on acreage and sales, essentially elbowing out small scale farms and producers like us. It’s a very bad bill for small family farmers, local eaters, and our community food system as a whole.

There is a hearing for this bill TOMORROW, February 4, at 1 pm in Salem. We need as many people as possible to submit testimony AGAINST this bill and hopefully stop it in its tracks. Testimony can be submitted up until Friday, February 6th at 1 pm.

To read up on additional background from Friends of Family Farmers (FOFF) and to access a template for submitting testimony, follow this link today: https://www.valleyflorafarm.com/node/19796

Please take action to protect our local farmstands and voice your support for small-scale, local family farming!

This is it - last farmstand of the season!

Head on up the creek to stock up on late season abundance (there are even tomatoes and sweet peppers to be had, courtesy of this balmy weather)! Our final farmstand will be open 11:30 - 2:30 today.

Also plenty of storage crops that will keep for weeks and months: carrots, beets, winter squash, shallots, celeriac, daikon, leeks, radicchio and much, much more, plus all the usual green leafies.

Thanks for your support all season! We love feeding this community.

Happy winter, see you next May when the farmstand re-opens for the 2026 season!

Call to Action: Please Support Healthy Food Access for Low Income Families!

As many of you know, Valley Flora offers a SNAP CSA option that allows low-income families to sign up for our CSA with SNAP and leverage Double Up Food Bucks to cover half the cost of their share. It’s an amazing program that makes VF produce (including this week’s 10 pound red cabbages 😆) more accessible to everyone in our community, no matter what their financial circumstances are. This program is made possible through our partnership with the Pacific Northwest CSA Coalition (PNWCSA), which processes SNAP payments and secures Double Up Food Bucks for our members.

Unfortunately, PNWCSA funding for 2026 is in jeopardy. In the past, they’ve mainly been funded by USDA grants, but as you can imagine, those have all evaporated. They are currently running a fundraising campaign through the end of the year: Nourish families. Support farmers. Strengthen communities.

Please consider making a donation to help this incredible non-profit continue their critical work throughout the state by visiting our PNWCSA fundraising page here:
https://secure.givelively.org/donate/pacific-nw-csa-coalition/nourish-families-support-farmers-strengthen-communities/zoe-bradbury

Without PNWCSA, the SNAP CSA program wouldn’t exist in our remote corner of the state and dozens of low-income families wouldn’t have access to farm-fresh produce. PNWCSA makes our food system on the Southcoast more equitable, more accessible and more awesome! Please support them during this time of need so we can keep our entire community well-fed.

The farm is closed this week for Thanksgiving - we’re giving our whole team a much-deserved break so that everyone can spend a few days with their heads in the proverbial hay manger - eating, resting and recharging for our final push to the 2025 finish line :)
That means no farmstand this Wednesday, but we’ll be back next week (December 3rd) for a couple more weeks of good food. Happy Thanksgiving!

We’re sending extra produce to the Common Good tomorrow - about 600 lbs of winter squash, potatoes, sweet peppers, onions and more - in hopes that we can help our community bridge the SNAP gap caused by the government shutdown. We deliver produce to the Common Good twice a month but we’ll be sending them extra in November to help ensure that families in Port Orford have access to fresh produce even if SNAP funds are frozen.

You can help by making a donation to the Common Good, or volunteering your time to help pack food boxes each month. Donations can be sent to:

Join Oregon Foodbank, Valley Flora and over 200 other Oregon organizations in demanding that SNAP benefits continue to flow during the government shutdown. 40 million people across the country are about to have their benefits frozen on November 1, including 16 million kids. Over 8,000 households in Coos and Curry County depend on SNAP to eat each month. Please sign this letter urging our federal officials to act: https://secure.oregonfoodbank.org/a/government-shutdown, and support our local and regional foodbanks during this heightened time of need: https://www.oregonfoodbank.org/find-support/food-support-network.

Winter squash and pumpkins are starting to steal the seasonal show, right at that perfect rainy moment when you want to fire up your oven, bake some squash and eat comfort food! Our earliest varieties - Acorn and Delicata - are now fully cured and piled high at the farmstand. More varieties coming soon, like Butternut and Kabocha. Reminder that we have switched to our Fall hours: Wednesdays ONLY from 11:30 to 2:30, from now until mid-December (no more Saturdays until next summer).

Just a reminder that our Farmstand and U-Pick will be closed tomorrow due to the weekend closure of Hwy 101. We’ll be back next Wednesday, 11:30 to 2:30, with all kinds of Fall abundance. Our final Saturday farmstand will be September 28th. Starting in October we’ll be on a Wednesday-only schedule until mid-December. Happy fall equinox to all!
