In 1994 the first 20 year “Pappy” was released in a green glass. This distillate was a rye bourbon (instead of pappys traditional wheated) from old Boone distillery. This bourbon scored 99/100 at the Beverage Tasting Institute (BTI) which was the best score by any whiskey…. Ever. It’s this bottle that sparked that Pappy craze and made Pappy Van winkle one of the most sought after spirits in the world.

That same year Julian Van Winkle III bottled 55 cases of cask proof old Boone distillate under the “Society of Bourbon Connoisseurs” label for export to Japan. The same juice that scored 99/100 but at cask strength 110 proof instead of 90.4. Basically a cask strength 1994 pappy and maybe one of the best bourbons ever bottled.
