Lansdowne Community Youth Garden and associated eight-week summer program educates students about nutrition, food systems, gardening/farming, entrepreneurship and business planning. It challenges them to learn outside “the classroom” while engaging them in real-life examples of the concepts related to these issues. Students spend mornings in the garden, tending the vegetables they will later harve
st to sell at the Farmers Market, and afternoons in the classroom, participating in activities and lessons surrounding the weekly theme. The Youth Garden summer program is designed to connect Lansdowne residents of all ages with fresh, local foods, improve nutrition, and build community around growing healthy food. Farmers Market shoppers can purchase produce grown just blocks from the market itself, giving the term “local” a whole new meaning.
