Our favorite time of the year!

Blueberry season is just around the corner and the berries are looking especially beautiful this year.

Ellen is planning to open toward the end of June—stay tuned to the farm’s social channels for updates.

To kick off the season, as you might’ve heard, our friend Chef Ricky Moore of Saltbox is bringing his fish fry back to the High Country. Sheri Castle will be back with us as well with her amazing blueberry cobbler made with berries from this year’s harvest!

Stay tuned for more exciting updates for this season! We’ve got a few surprises up our sleeve…

We hope to see you on the farm this summer!

Why do we do a fish fry at Old Orchard Creek?

A fish fry is more than a plate of seafood-it's a way of saying "the food is ready, and you are welcome."

We don't do a fish fry just for tradition's sake; we do it because gathering around fried shrimp, hushpuppies, and laughter is how our community remembers who we are.

Want to know the real story behind why this meal matters so much to us, from Stanly County fish houses, to Halifax County, to a little red cabin on Big Horse Creek?

…and you’ll get to learn a little about one of my favorite humans - Roma Gene Taylor!

We remember the day we first met Peter-Greg. There was an old fence that came within a few feet of the back of the farmhouse. Walter and I were standing on the fence line, looking into what is now the backyard. Greg walked up and, in what we would learn to be his way—quietly, humbly, and with a discerningly assessing manner—introduced himself. From that moment, he became part of our farm family.

For over twenty-three years, he was a part of our lives—a part of our journey. Laughter, jokes, and lots of love were his way. For many, he was also known as the humble barn quilt artist. He was so talented and one of the kindest people we’ve ever known. To his nieces and nephews—and to the kids he gladly gave 4-wheeler rides to—he was the cool uncle. He was a beloved brother and a friend whose kindnesses will never be fully known.

Last Friday, he was in a tragic accident. He left all those who loved him yesterday, and he will be missed. That is an understatement. There’s a huge hole in many hearts today.

Blueberry season is coming, and it will be a very different one this year without Greg. So when you visit the farm the next time, take a moment to admire one of the barn quilts around the property and say a little prayer of gratitude for the kind, sweet people whose friendship never wavers—those whose lives make our journeys a little easier.

Greg, thank you. Rest easy. And visit often.

Who’s ready for another High Country Fish Fry? 🐟✨
Save the date — Saturday, June 27th — because Chef Ricky Moore and the Saltbox crew are coming back to Old Orchard Creek!

And just like that, Dolly’s settled in. She’s been shy—keeping a good five feet from any human contact. But when Gus’s favorite female veterinarian (no offense, 😘) drove up from Raleigh, where she works her magic with large animals at , to meet the newest family member, Dolly was first to greet Aunt Lisa and her handful of sweetfeed!

We love making new friends! If you’re looking for a great escape, come visit. We have winter availability—and there’s a big fireplace! Here’s a review from a recent stay in Orchard Cottage:

Our stay at Old Orchard Creek Farm was nothing short of incredible! From the very beginning, the owners made everything seamless by emailing detailed information before our arrival—even while they were on vacation. We felt completely prepared and welcomed before we even got there.

Debbie, who was on-site during our stay, deserves a standing ovation. She was truly the sweetest host we’ve ever encountered—attentive, engaging, resourceful, and genuinely kind. She made us feel right at home and was always happy to help with anything we needed.
The cottage itself was perfect for our family of four—cozy, comfortable, and stocked with all the necessities. It had everything we needed to relax and enjoy our time together.

Even though the blueberries weren’t in season, the farm was a joy to explore. Seeing the dogs and donkeys roaming around was such a treat—they were beyond precious and added so much charm to the experience.
And the highlight of our entire stay: Luca’s Path hiking trail. Wow—just wow. With clear directions and a well-marked path, it ended up being one of the best hikes I’ve ever done. The view at the top was spectacularly breathtaking—the kind of moment that makes you stop, soak it all in, and feel incredibly grateful.

Everything about our stay was wonderful, peaceful, and memorable. We left with full hearts and beautiful memories and cannot recommend Old Orchard Creek Farm highly enough. We will absolutely be returning!
