Happy New Year everyone! Getting some of my favorite gals together to eat, drink and be merry was exactly what I needed to usher in 2024. My life changed more drastically in the last 12 months than ever before. It brings to mind the quote, āThe only constant in life is change.ā
āLife and everything in it is subject to transformation. Learning how to adapt is key to your overall well-being.ā
This is something my dad repeated many times during my childhood and it reminds me to embrace the unfamiliar and the uncomfortable.
I donāt believe in New Yearās Resolutions. While I think they are filled with good intentions, the pressure to set grand goals coupled with the expectation for instant change can lead to frustration and abandonment. Did you know that statistically 80% of people fail to keep their resolutions by February? Of the remaining 20%, only about 8% stick with them the entire year.
I was a Psychology major in college and have always been fascinated by the human brain. What if I told you that the high percentage of failure to keep resolutions has more to do with neuroscience than it does willpower? Our brains are naturally resistant to change due to a concept known as cognitive inertia. (More on this below.) The brain prefers familiar patterns and resists efforts to disrupt established routines, even if those routines are not beneficial.
With the life changes Iāve experienced and the awareness that comes along with it, I know that change comes from consistent, intentional habits. Real change is a journey, not a one-time event. Small, sustainable changes over time can lead to profound transformations. So cheers to a New Year, to being intentional in all areas of life, to taking things one day at a time, even one step at a time. To having empathy for yourself when you fall short and the belief in yourself to try again when you do. To having empathy for others because sometimes people carry heavy burdens we know nothing about. To creating the year that youāve always dreamed of.
Love to you all. Letās make it a great one. š¤
