So we have been quiet here for the last couple of months at the The Strupp Chicken Ranch DBA The Fluffy Butt Hut.. allow me to explain why…
Running a farm/homestead is no easy task, especially when you and your husband have full time “9-5” jobs, with kiddos in school, pups, cats, bunnies, chickens etc.
The last couple of months have tried every thought and bone in my body. I wanted to give up this dream I’ve always had of being self-sufficient and providing home grown food and fresh eggs for my family, as well as people in the community. This unwavering crazy changing weather messed up our whole growing schedule to begin with, we usually know in Las Vegas when we can put stuff in the ground and it’s all good. We can pretty much grow stuff all year long. This year was not the same. We put all our indoor starters out and then... BAMM! Crazy cold weather out of nowhere killed all our heirloom starts. Yay!!
We then had to go buy starts from places like Star nursery and Lowe’s and well, they sucked. Our tomato’s which are always such a strong crop for us along with our peppers … did not do a dang thing this year, zip, nada, zilch... NOTHING. Couldn’t even make a meal with any tomato’s this year. Not one meal, let alone canning and saving.
We planted things directly from seed like corn, sage, spaghetti squash, watermelon … our corn took weeks but grew so beautiful, we had like 30 corn cobs and we would have been able to harvest right before the 115-degree heat wave came. Instead, right before that heat wave came our whole garden was decimated overnight! Like everything eaten and destroyed. I was in shock, could not figure out what happened as we had never experienced anything like this before. Guess what it was... ?
RATS!! Like what the heck?? In 2 years at this property, never an issue. Seemingly overnight decimates $1000’s of dollars of work, endless hours of work and we were devastated.
We battled for over a month, with all natural methods. We spent so much money on sticky traps that worked but it was a daily routine that spent hours trying to surround our garden and chickens to protect them. I finally talked with our bug/pest guy… we didn’t want to go the poison bait box route, but we had no choice. Our bug guy brought out professional bait boxes and within 10 days the activity was way down and well, a bunch of dead rats on our property. This bait won’t hurt our other animals, I researched heavily before imploring this method.
Sooooo, I thought our garden was done had pretty much given up. Then over the last few weeks, so many spaghetti squash. So many sugar-baby watermelons!! Zucchini, sunflowers, cherry tomatoes!! I mean there is light at the end of the tunnel!!
The best thing… we were getting literally no eggs most days, I was hopeless and devastated .. we’ve done multiple things to help our girls be less stressed with those rats invading them, built them a new enclosure for during the day when they can’t free range with red tail hawks around. The fruits of our labor have paid off! We finally suddenly got 7 eggs today when most days we got none!
Never give up!! Hard work pays off and if you give up, you’ll never know what you could have become! Love you all ❤️ - The Strupp Chicken Ranch DBA The Fluffy Butt Hut
