The population of the world will reach 9.9 billion by 2050. How we will feed the masses depends on the food trends of today and their impact on the future of food consumption. What can we do to reduce the impact of agriculture and food processing on the environment? With over one-third of total greenhouse gas emissions from food production, a solution for more sustainable processing practices is necessary.

To stick to climate targets and reduce carbon emissions, people need to change what they eat, and the food industry must change how it produces this food. Fortunately, new technologies could create a more sustainable future. These innovations will change how the world eats, from lab-grown meat and gourmet insects to radically new ways of farming.

However, in 2019 companies like Meituan-Dianping , a Chinese shopping platform, recorded record-breaking profits totaling $400 million. More than half of the platform’s profits came from online food ordering.

In the United States, online food ordering had a total market size of $22 billion that same year. Experts expect it to reach over $32.3 billion by 2024. This new food trend continues to increase in popularity as innovations in technology drive further advancements making food delivery a faster, more streamlined process.

Extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, appear to be increasing due to climate change, according to Ajinder Plahey, an executive with HowGood an independent research company. “Agriculture is on the front lines,” she said. With each passing week there are new reports quantifying the toll of extreme weather on agriculture and hunger around the world.

“Companies that don’t have sustainability as part of their core value proposition need to act now to protect against future reputational impacts and loss of market share,” said Shikha Jain, author of the 2021 study by global consultancy Simon-Kucher & Partners, in a statement. “The clock is ticking, and failure to think through the implications could have long-term consequences for traditional firms.”

The food supply chain includes several steps in which food journeys from the farmers to consumers. It is a network of various actors at individual stages that produce and deliver a final product to meet customers’ demands. Researchers continually investigate and analyze this supply chain and look for ways to improve efficiencies, reduce waste, and avoid food insecurities.

Studies have shown that staple food crops will decline by a third by 2050 (due to several factors). Ultimately, this will lead to issues at a far greater scale than the world experienced during the pandemic. How society farms, distributes and consumes food has various harmful impacts on the planet. It affects everything, especially food security. Regenerative agriculture practices are one solution that has gained a lot of traction in recent years. Many of the world’s most popular brands are revamping their business models to incorporate regenerative agriculture to improve their environmental impact.

One well-known flour producer, King Arthur Baking Company, asserts that by 2030, it will source only regeneratively grown wheat. Many larger brands follow suit, including Walmart, Target, General Mills, and Unilever – a British-based multinational consumer goods company. These efforts also strengthen supply chains and drive the 138% increase in business interest in these sustainable methods. Consumers are turning to healthier options when they dine out or shop at the grocery. Wellness is now a driving force behind many consumers’ buying decisions. McKinsey found that almost 80% of consumers view wellness as important, with half of those considering it a top priority. The company estimates the global wellness market at $1.5 trillion and expects it to grow between 5% and 10% every year.
