We've been busy since posting a week ago. Our neighbors, who farmsit for us when we are away, we're married. I catered the meal, and Mike officiated the ceremony! It was a first for both of us. We were very happy that we got to take part in their big day. And, it WAS an eventful day because the remnants of Hurricane Isaias blew through as the ceremony went forward. It was an outdoor wedding in the neighbor's pasture across the road from us. None of us will forget the details of the day! The bride and groom were precious !

I worked all last week preparing the food. I smoked 30 pounds of meat (chicken, beef, and pork). I made 12 pounds of macaroni and cheese. I baked a bushel of local apples and made 4 gallons of slaw with local cabbage.

Monday and Tuesday of this week, I spent with my grandkids who live near Charlottesville, Virginia

A female bluebird hit our picture window yesterday afternoon. I was worried that she wouldn't recover. She was knocked out flat on her side. I knew, however, that the best thing to do was to give them time before intervening. After a few minutes, she sat up, panting hard, but seemed ok. I didn't crowd her, hoping she would rest a while, which she did. The last time I went out to check, she chirped at me a few times. Then, when Mike came to the house for lunch, she flew up into a tree. She stayed in the tree for a good while, flitting from limb to limb, before finally taking off.

If you find an injured bird, don't try to feed it. If it doesn't recover on its own in a few minutes, put it in a dark box with a lid (with air holes) and take it to a certified wildlife rehabilitator.

The calves are doing well and growing. It takes me a lot longer now to name calves. After 20-plus years, I am running out of names, haha! The larger male is Bubba, the smaller male is Baxter, and the little heifer will be called "Dosie". Her official registered name is T Cupp's Lady Do-si-do, as a nod to Old Time Fiddling Music and Appalachia. Her dam is T Cupp's She's a Diva and her sire is Blue Ridge Billy.

These days, I take pictures and forget to post them.

For so many years, we've used social media to promote the farm. Honestly, the constant interaction was not in character for me.

We're loving the slower pace of retirement and less social and social media interaction. We stay busy, but we don't feel like we have to create noise in order to keep a business or career active enough for the algorithm to take notice.

Occasionally, I remember to take photos and even less occasionally, I remember to post them. 🫠

It takes time to cook from scratch, but I love the process.

And when I say cook from scratch, I mean cook from scratch.

Fresh romas from the garden were washed and tossed in a pot to cook until tender. Then, I ran them through a colander to remove the skins and seeds. I added chopped basil from a container of fresh herbs growing on the porch, some garlic and salt. Then, I simmered the delicious smelling sauce until it thickened.

I cooked a pound of burger from our pasture beef and added it to the sauce.

I added two eggs from our hens along with cottage cheese I made from our Jersey's milk to some cooked spaghetti noodles. I threw in some Parmesan as well. I used a little homemade butter to coat the pan, pressed the noodle mixture into it, covered with a generous portion of sauce, and topped it with homemade mozzarella.

The baked spaghetti cooked in a 350 degree oven until the mixture set up and the mozzarella turned brown around the edges.

We had salad on the side with tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce from our garden.

I made homemade Thousand Island salad dressing for the salad.
