This is probably my favorite rooster this year. He is a second generation olive egger and is absolutely stunning. The hens with his genetics are laying beautiful green eggs. Next to him is Tanya Tucker, she is a rumpless olive egger as well that I absolutely adore. Getting so excited for spring 2022 breeding season, but for now we will enjoy this beautiful weather ❤️

This spring I was was devastated when one of our project roo’s was eaten by an owl. He was a fibro egger and (a) I had no idea what I was going to do with our project pen and (b) was so upset because he was such a good boy! Well, shortly thereafter and as luck would have it, this fella was in need of a home. Now, he isn’t the svarthona/Ameraucana cross I started with BUT he is a Ayam Cemani/Appenzeller Spitzhauben cross that came from Aminalls Farm❤️❤️ everyone meet Dwight Yoakam! He will be covering the fibro egger pen in 2022!

New video up!

When I had the goal of starting Opry Hill, the first thing that came to mind was “Friendly Chickens”!
Raising friendly chickens starts with breeding friendly birds and a good way to start that process is to train them young to love people and to love being held. Some of the little loves in this video are ready for their new homes. So while I am sad to see them go I am excited for a someone to have them ❤️❤️

Another new breed coming Spring 2022 to Opry Hill! The Silverudds Blues. 💙💙

I cannot even tell you how excited I am for these little babes. 2021 is the year I introduce 4 new breeds to our flock. So far I have successfully hatched SvartHonas and now I introduce to you a few of our recently hatched newbies. I have researched and purchased from breeders around the USA. I have selected them for quality and integrity. Some of you might know them as Isbars but their name has since be officially changed to Silverudds Blues. They lay beautiful mint colored eggs and are a blue feather color variety. For those that may not be familiar with chicken genetics, blues come in black, blue and splash or BBS for short. I am so excited to be able to offer these chicks starting in spring of 2022. Picture is a splash and blue chick. Thank you so much to Wabi Sabi Acres for their high quality hatching eggs. All her chickens come from first imports and it is without doubt that Hope strives toward improving the breed. I will work towards that same goal in the years to come. ❤️

One of my projects for the year is to grow our flock with some unique birds. Along with pure breed birds I am also experimenting with combining genetics of my favorite birds. These little babes are the combination of a Rhode Island Red and a Maran. My goal was to breed a bird that lays beautiful copper eggs of the Maran that also has the winter hardy qualities of the Rhode Island Red. Excited to see what these little ones can do. I think I am going to call them a Rhode Red Maran...who knows. Accepting ideas for their name now.

Rhode Island Red’s are the classic brown egg laying bird with the amazing ability to adapt to weather extremes and lay an amazing 250-300 eggs per year! I also am partial to this breed because of their quirky attitude and lovable nature.

Marans are the iconic French breed of chicken that lays a deep copper egg. Some variety’s have feathered legs as you can see in these chicks. They are a large breed that offers a friendly addition to our flock ❤️

The girls are officially ready for spring! All collected this week and ready for the frying pan ❤️❤️

Planting trees in January with Clark's Fork Trees

Took a break from the chicken farming to plant something green in winter! When the ground isn't frozen, planting trees in January is always a good idea. It was a windy couple of days to get this project underway but it makes me excited for spring! Thank you to Clark’s Fork Trees for the beautiful addition!

How to naturally keep moisture and smell out of your coop || Coop tour

In the past year, I have learned way more than I would care to talk about in regards to chicken poo. There are many ways to clean a coop, this is the method I have found that works best for me! I try to stay away from any chemicals as much as I can and am so grateful that I found First Saturday Lime. Its a workhorse! It is a safe and natural pest and odor control can be used around the house, garden and in this case, the chicken coop! it is a work horse and I am constantly finding another use for it.
