Howdy folks!

September is upon us! That means summer wraps up and fall gets in full swing! And the farm opens for the season Friday, Sept 17 at 9am.

What a summer it has been for farming! Certainly OUR most challenging season yet... Hot, dry and.... Hoppers! Easily has been twice the input this year and feel like less to show for it!

Check out the number of days over 90 in J,J and the first half of A! Also during this timeframe we measure a cumulative total of 0.28" of rain! Pumpkins are stressed by that kind of heat-- since mid August weather has been more favorable, so we are still hoping for some more late season growth here.... The field pumpkin yield showing today feels skinny.

But, we have a good looking stand of giants and other speciality varieties so, by all means, the show will roll on!

Stay tuned for more details over the next few weeks.... The time for cider and hayrides at T&C Farms is almost here!

Quiz from yesterday.... Answers below.

Turkey and 14 chicks are doing well!

Still hiding them in the tall Alfalfa!

Survey/Quiz from yesterday:

Match the number with the predator--- how many poultry have the predators killed on T&C Farms? What predator--- has killed the most, 60, the second and the third? Post answers in the comments.

1st. "60"
2nd. "45"
3rd. "15"

A. Bear
B. Coyote
C. Mountain Lion
D. Eagle
E. Raccoon
F. Mink
G. Owl
H. Neighborhood Dog

Answer:
Predators are a battle for every farm.... Our main battles have been protecting poultry!

The number one predator on poultry at the Farm has been Raccoon. They have taken over 60 hens... possibly closer to 70. We have much better facilities for the hens than we used to, so these losses have thankfully slowed.

Second place is..... The Owl! They are agressive and practically silent predators... And because they have air assault, very hard to keep away from free range poultry-- you can't put a net over the "range." Owls have taken everything from chicks to ducks to adult turkeys. Their favorite seem to be ducks. Thankfully, evening/night is their prime time, so it IS possible to create some protection with overnight coops/shelters. The chickens LIKE coops... The ducks and turkeys-- not as much.
(We didn't have any quiz winners.... No-one guessed owls!)

Third place is coyote. We lost 10 turkeys in one night and have had several other occasional losses.

Our neighborhood dogs are good dogs.... They also have poultry on their farms. So they do well.
Also, we have had mink, but so far they have only stolen eggs! Literally got one, one morning, with an egg in its mouth.

Total value of poultry loss has been over $1,500 direct cost... Plus opportunity costs of having to replace chicks and grow them 5 months to start producing eggs. As a producer, the price of free range eggs must not only cover feed and labor, but also these, sometimes deviating, costs!

Thanks to everyone who put in quiz answers!

Busy around here! Some Pumpkins starting to bloom. Ray's Aeich got a new hub off a '44 model. And our heirloom hen had 14 turkey chicks hatch. I'll try to get pics to post, but within a day of hatching, she had taken them all and hidden them in the tall Alfalfa!

Farm Saturday is this July 10th! Come celebrate America at the farm with a water Revolutionary War for some fun history and a free root beer float with Wilcoxson's ice cream and IBC root beer! It cant get much more American or refreshing than that.

June was busy! And July has been no different. We did get 0.09" of rain July 5! It made that day feel marvelous at about 30d cooler! But with it being so dry, we hardly noticed the moisture. So irrigate away, farmer! Also, had a fun little septic repair to undertake. Very thankful the farm has access to a backhoe! Even with all the other work, we were able to add a new activity to the farm activity park-- a Zipline for the brave hearts!

Saturday, July 10. Gates open at 9:30 am.
We will have a story at 10am and plan to kick off our reenactment starting at about 11am.
Come able to get a little wet-- the redcoats surrender, remember-- They might get a lot wet! Bring water pistols if you like. We will have balloons.
Bring your own PicNic for lunch. Coffee and cookies will be available for purchase in #TheShoppe.
Excited to have some #familyfunonthefarm!

General Admission $11
Youth and Senior $9
Household Admission $55

Happy Memorial Day!
Very thankful for all who gave all to make and keep this country!

AND very thankful for streams of water! Between April and May we have measured 1.5" of rain. Got the first set of irrigation for the year going tonight. This is a poor picture of it, but that is a 1 inch shaft of water blowing out about 90 feet... Getting water on the giants!

Lunch will be available onsite, or BYO picnic.

The water might be too high, but you can sure try a line for fishing...
