When Frankie and Venya haven’t been pulling their weight, I ordered Ricochet Rick to backfill their positions. We spotted a fox in the back of the run the other day. I have to admit, every morning Rick scares the crap out of me when I look out the window. Ever since Ricochet has been out there, except this morning, poor Jo was chasing Frankie with Rick in her mouth. Frankie thinks Rick is taking her job, so she must eliminate it.

Just some simple rules to follow Homestead rule #1: If I pick a big fat squash, Frankie gets to claim that s**t as her new toy.

Frankie’s livestock guardian credentials are officially under review.
I caught her red handed cobs in mouth deciding that chicken snack time was actually a game of "haha look what I got." As she’s doing full victory laps around the yard, hoarding every piece while twenty something annoyed chickens watch in pure disbelief.
All while Venya watching from the sidelines, having a massive "I told you so" moment in her head.

Harvest mornings are always special, but even more so with Mom helping out today. She didn’t have enough hands to hold it all. I
love that. It’s so awesome to see the dirt turn into such an abundance. Days like this remind me exactly why we do what we do working with nature, being able to share the harvest, and celebrating the fruits of our labor with an amazing tomato sandwich.

We’ve been trying to nurse Phoenix back to health for a minute but this morning started with a massive scare. I found Phoenix down in the coop lethargic, not eating or drinking, and unable to stand. When a bird is that weak, you have to act fast.
After a close inspection, I found the culprit: a severe clogged vent that had completely backed up her system and drained her energy.
One warm water cleanup, and a healthy serving of probiotic water and scrambled eggs later... she is officially rising! Her head is up, she’s eating, and she’s resting comfortably in isolation.
She earned the name Phoenix today for her incredible resilience. Now she just needs some rest so she can get back out to the flock with her sister Raven. Wish us luck to get her back to health. I’m stopping to grab some Vitamin b to help her get those legs under her again.

Frankie is officially public enemy number one.
The chickens are traumatized, the backyard looks like a war zone of freshly dug craters, and she’s acting like a complete menace to society. Welcome to teenage Frankie.
