With increased demand from companies seeking quality ingredients for their green food blends, we needed to expand our certified organic acreage. Two years ago, we purchased an additional 95 acres of the world-renowned glacial bottomland soil, located north of the Kansas River.
To convert land to USDA Certified Organic requires three years without the use of any chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. During the first year of this transition, we planted a legume mix to enhance the humus and nitrogen levels in the soil.
This year, we planted oats, another well-known method for increasing soil fertility. The effect of the legumes from the previous year caused the oats to grow tall, almost to the shoulders of Jeff, our exceptional farm manager.
Pines is celebrating its 50th Anniversary of introducing the original green superfoods to the natural food marketplace. Gluten-free Pines Wheat Grass and Pines Barley Grass, harvested at the jointing stage, are naturally concentrated, economical, and convenient ways to increase the dark green roughage in the diet. USDA research found that 9 out of 10 Americans do not eat enough dark green, leafy wholefood vegetables.
The lack of these vital foods in the diet can result in poor colon health and other adverse health consequences.
