Good morning! This is a bittersweet day for us. It’s the last day the shop is open (we can rest) but farmer Ted has already shifted to harvest mode; the corn is ready. (no time to rest)
The sunflowers behind the store are still in various stages of growth…some are filling seeds and some are still opening. (It’s been a strange year for this field.)
We still have a few calendars of neighbor Kevin’s at the shop this morning, but he has an online presence, too. I’ll try to link up in the commets.
You’ll have to settle for my photos today as neighbor Kevin was too busy playing with grandbabies this morning to traipse around the sunflower field.
We would like to sincerely thank you all for a wonderful sunflower year. Feel free to photo dump in the comments as we do love to see your photos! Even if we don’t have time to comment on each one, we try to look at them all.

It’s been an interesting sunflower year. First, the cooler temps allowed the flowers to look nice a week longer than usual. Also, despite being planted on the same day, some sunflowers came up later, so we still have some by fresh blooms out in the field behind the store.

Speaking of the store, this is our last weekend. We will be open today and tomorrow from 9-5 and then we will close for the season. Neighbor Kevin DID get more calendars in last night and we have them in the store this morning.

(Thanks for the daily pics, Kevin!)

Good morning! This is DEFINITELY the last weekend for any sunflowers. The west field at the store (14755 243rd st, Lawrence, KS 66044) still has some blooms…especially along the waterway on the south of the field. Neighbor Kevin took these pictures to show you what is out there still. You have to hunt, but they are there. This is also the last weekend for the Sunflower General store. It is open 9-5 through Sunday. Neighbor Kevin should be getting more calendars in sometime today…so we hope they hit the store tomorrow.

Good morning!! Neighbor Kevin caught the crepuscular rays last night. 😍 Simply amazing!!
What’s also amazing is how good the fields still look. This will be our last weekend open at the store, but the fields remain unlocked if you venture out. Bear in mind that corn harvest is beginning for us so there will be big trucks and equipment on the road. Farmer Ted is (literally) shifting gears. This isn’t my last post. I’ll keep you updated through the weekend.

Neighbor Kevin was out and about this morning, and since he knew exactly what we all wanted to know, he sent this:
“I walked both fields this morning. They are not muddy, but tacky, will burn off today. There are certainly flowers past their prime, but a lot of blooms still to open, so a lot of really good opportunity for people to still see the sunflowers through the weekend and get good pictures. The far east end of the east field is a lot of later blooms. It’s kind of like mushroom hunting, you have to be willing so walk farther than anyone else, to find the best ones, and when you think you have walked farther than anyone else, walk a little farther!…But honestly, there will be a lot of good blooms off the “beaten” paths through the last weekend.”
So there you go! The fields are tacky but manageable. The parking should be just fine. An extra pair of shoes is a good idea. The store is open through the weekend…and a great place to wear those clean shoes.
We are surprised we still have blooms. This cool weather has been allowing that to happen.

GOT MUD? If you come to the fields, the answer is yes. BRING EXTRA SHOES! Don’t park on anything other than grass or gravel. You WILL be stuck. (Maybe grab the number for a tow company to have on hand)
Extra Shoes. Extra Shoes. Extra Shoes. Extra Shoes….
(If you’re coming to the Sunflower General store, please shop before you go to the field My mop thanks you.)
Currently, we have sunny skies and lots of thunder. And where there’s thunder…

Neighbor Kevin captured the sunrise to the east & a roll cloud to the west. We are FINALLY getting a bit of much needed rain. We are going to take some time this morning and breathe. We hope you get to do the same!

Good morning! Check out these pollinators! The insects that look somewhat like lightning bugs are soldier beetles. They pollinate the sunflowers and also eat aphids and caterpillars. We love them. If you venture out here, you’ll definitely see them, as well as bees. No need to fear either…they are too busy with tasks to pay you much notice.
Pics are from this morning. Fields still have plenty of yellow. (Gotta thank the cool weather for that.)

The sunflowers are filling out. At this point the heads are getting fat with seeds. They aren’t quite ready, (we won’t harvest them until November) but they will all go for bird feed. The wild birds will take about a third of the crop before that happens.

I feel like it’s a photo dump day so show me what you have! I caught a picture of last night’s sunset but missed it from the perspective of the flowers. If you caught one, please share below.

Yes, the fields are still open. Yes, they still look great. Yes, Frog Hoppin’ is at the Sunflower General Store today.

Good morning! This lovely, cool weather and missing all of the storms has made a perfect fall for sunflowers. They have really hung onto their glory. This very well could be the last weekend of pretty blooms but we still do have some that are just now opening….so who knows. (We did plant them all on the same day in July.)
If you venture out to see the flowers today, make sure you come down to the general store as Frog Hoppin’ BBQ will be there with their food truck.
Thanks to Neighbor Kevin for the photos.

Just a Family Farm

Hi! Grinter Farms is just your average, ordinary family farm in Kansas. Farming is our livelihood and we predominately grow soybeans and corn, but for the last 50 years or so, we have also planted a few sunflowers. This crop proved to be one that we couldn’t keep people out of, and honestly, we never tried...who are we to stop the enjoyment of others doing no harm? The bloom only lasts for about two weeks and it would truly be a shame to not allow others the opportunity to see it. The bloom usually occurs around the first week in September, and no, we don’t charge admission or a parking fee. We work hard to make sure that we can keep what has become a tradition for so many others alive. Thank you for helping us in that endeavor.
