Windy Ridge Acres, LLC - Mitchell Farmstead

Windy Ridge Acres, LLC - Mitchell Farmstead The farmstead was established in December of 2020 and has slowly grown yearly. It all started with a small flock of 6 backyard chickens. In the city.

We specialize in handmade goat milk soap, pasture-raised eggs, baked goods, and some seasonal produce. Nate and Amanda married in 2008, started a small family, frequented the farmers market and became enthralled with chickens. A few years later they decided the kids were old enough to 'help' raise some chicks and the rest is history. Backyard chickens were the perfect gateway animal to wanting mor

e land, more chickens, and more animals! They sold their Lexington home, moved two counties over to Lawrenceburg and grew their flock. Amanda started a garden and planted a few fruit trees. Then they added goats to help with the overgrown brush in the pastures. Then Amanda started milking the goats and making goat milk soap. That's how their little farmstead started. Follow them on their journey to see what other adventures, animals, and plants they decide to add to their farmstead.

I’m testing new recipes to find a *better* liquid soap! Liquid soap starts with combining fats (oils), liquids (water and goat milk), and KHO lye (potassium hydroxide- different from bar soap). The ingredients cook in the crockpot until forming a paste. The paste is diluted with distilled water to make a foaming liquid soap.

This time comes with all livestock owners. The decision to keep replacement breeders, sell, or butcher. These guys were an easy sell to a cattle farm. They’ll mow down the honeysuckle and other w**ds; with the goal of saving time in w**d management and using less herbicides.

🐐 If you asked me 18 years ago if I saw myself herding goats, I would’ve laughed! It all started 8 years with a few backyard chickens in suburban Lexington. Those 6 laying hens had us craving more land. We found our small farm in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. After a year on the farm we enlisted the help of goats to help clear the overgrown pasture and fence rows. After the goats cleaned up the vegetation and stole our hearts, we couldn’t part with them. They continue to manage the vegetation growth on the farm and now supply meat to local customers, and I peddle goat milk soaps made with our goat milk.

Before I started my walk, I took some time to bask in the beauty of nature. I walked around the pond in search of spiders, perused the edge of the woods, and snapped some pictures. Pepper, our farm cat, trailed behind me and occasionally waited on the driveway.
