Long time no see! We don’t use social media much anymore, but I want to remind you that our Farm Store is still open every day, AND it’s stocked full of gorgeous fall veggies this morning, AND the ā€œpay what you canā€ sign has made a return. Whether you are a SNAP customer, not receiving a paycheck right now, or for any reason at all! Please pay what you are able, take what you need, grab something extra for a neighbor, or pay a little more if that’s in your budget. Let’s take care of each other, y’all. ā¤ļø

šŸ‘‹šŸ» Happy summer, y’all!

Here is our hot and sweaty family checking in to let you know that we don’t really post much on here anymore, but we are doing great! We miss seeing you at market but we are very much enjoying feeling ā€œnormalā€ on the weekends and actually *r e s t i n g* once in a while.

Our Farm Store gets stocked twice a week - and is currently full of the first potatoes and cherry tomatoes and garlic! šŸ§„ Open everyday, 9 - 7. Veggies also at Locals Food Hub & Pizza Pub Windy Corner Market and Zim's Cafe šŸ”

We hope you are also finding ways to to rest and stay cool. Don’t forget to support the farmers at the market this weekend - and do a rain dance for all of us, please? šŸŒ§ļø

This picture was from June of the second year on the new property. The first season on the new soil was filled with some hefty soil challenges so it was awesome to see how much the soil had changed in some parts of the garden that second year. BUT it was also wild to see how certain parts of the garden still needed a lot of work. The light brown mulch on the left side is from a cover crop and you can see from the drone shot how wet it still is there towards the bottom of the photo. It flatly refused to drain.

This new farm has had the trickiest most difficult soil we’ve ever worked on (which is saying something considering we’ve been on five farms…). As hard as that was, the soil got better and we came up with a lot of new tricks for managing it. We’ve learned a ton about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to managing difficult soils––from stubborn clay to cranky rocks and everything in between.

And it’s for that reason that one of our upcoming field days will be dedicated primarily to discussing different techniques for creating living soil and the various methods with which we’ve had success (and the ones we haven’t). So anyway, don’t forget to check out the different upcoming field days we’ll have at the farm this spring - link in profile or visit roughdraftfarmstead.com! There are a handful of scholarships are still available as well. Gonna be a nerdy good time

Hey all, today we’re announcing our no-till field days for 2024 here on the farm!

Same as last year—because space is limited, tickets are limited, so don’t wait too long. We will do our best to offer more tours in the future, but can’t guarantee it will be this year.

Each field day has its own theme and you can read more about each at roughdraftfarmstead.com (link in profile). There are a few scholarships available for each day so don’t hesitate to shoot us an email if you can’t afford it (and the patreon members can use your discounts šŸ˜‰ ). Our farm is a little wonky to walk but we’ll definitely do our best to accommodate for physical or any other limitations (feel free to email us with specific requests or needs).

🚨Difficult decision incoming!🚨

So our farm does a lot. It grows food for area restaurants and retailers. It supplies our farm store. It is, sometimes begrudgingly, the main source of video fodder for . And, since 2018, it has grown produce for the . But this year we will with no small amount of sadness be ::takes a deep breath:: dropping our farmers’ market booth in Lexington.

With our amazing employee Greg moving on after three years (thank you, Greg šŸ™ŒšŸ») coinciding with our kids being independent enough for Hannah to help more (and even themselves help a bit), we’re in a good place to ease back on the number of things this farm does while improving some of the others. Leaving the market is hard, but we are also excited for what this means for us as a farm and family - getting back to working together full time, having weekends with the boys, honing in on our goals and ambitions for our work in the community, and perhaps having a bit of energy leftover to connect with some of you in REAL LIFE (not just for five minutes while we are working at the market!)

We will dearly dearly dearly miss our Lexington folks and will be ecstatic to see you all when we stop by the market for visits, but for the foreseeable future (unless we freak out at some point and decide to come running back haha), we are ending our time at the Lexington Farmers Market. This spring you will still be able to buy our food directly from us at our farm store and/or through in Frankfort, plus several of the Ouita Michael group restaurants. Of course, we will keep you updated as that list grows or changes. Our Farm Card members - check your emails for more details!

Thank you for the last 6 years, Lexington. You are the best -J+H
