This is Rocky, a sweet little Barred Rock chick. My son didn't name her because of her breed, though. He named her Rocky because she was pecking at a tiny rock in the driveway.

We got our first new chicks of the year yesterday! Also, our first new chicks on our new property. We have 3 barred rocks and 3 Easter Eggers. All from the Tractor Supply Co. In Ukiah. We're supposed to pick up some more barred rock and some Rhode Island Reds from our local feed store, Long Valley Feed and Supply, later this week. I am so excited!

Farm Fresh Strawberry Shortcake with Honey Whipped Cream & Chocolate Ganache

Ingredients:
3 pints of strawberries
1 cup sugar

2 cups all purpose flour
1 tbl spoon baking powder
1 t spoon salt
3 tbl spoons brown sugar
6 tbl spoons butter, frozen
1 t spoon vanilla
3/4 buttermilk plus a bit extra
A sprinkling of course sugar

4 oz semi sweet chocolate
1/2 heavy cream

1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1/2 t spoon vanilla
Honey to taste

Step 1: Macerate Strawberries
Slice the strawberries & place them in a large bowl. Sprinkle them with sugar, toss, & set aside.

Step 2: Make Shortcake Dough
Pre-heat the oven to 425 f. Combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Use a cheese grater to quickly add small pieces of frozen butter. Use your fingers to rub the butter into the flour until you have a texture similar to course sand. Add 3/4 cup of buttermilk and vanilla. Stir just to incorporate. Do not over mix.

Step 3: Form Shortcakes
Lightly flour a work surface. Use your hands to flatten the dough to about 1" thick. Fold the dough in half. Repeat 3 times. Flatten the dough to 1" one last time and cut into desired size/shape with a biscuit or cookie cutter. We used a 2 1/2" heart shape.

Step 4: Bake Shortcakes
Use a pastry brush or paper towel to brush a little buttermilk over the top of the shortcakes and sprinkle with course sugar. Bake for about 12 minutes or until perfectly golden brown.

Step 5: Ganache
Microwave chocolate and 1/2 cup heavy cream for 3 seconds. Stir. Microwave for 30 more seconds and stir again.

Step 6: Whipped Cream
Add vanilla to the cream and whip into soft peaks, gently fold in honey until you've reached your desired level of sweetness (we used 1-2 tbl spoons).

Step 7: Assemble
Gently pull apart your shortcake so you have half. Top with berries, whipped cream, and drizzle with chocolate.

So, s**t is crazy right now.

I'm in Morgan Hill with the (human) kids. Been here for a couple weeks. Our generator died and that was the last straw. Left the homestead and are staying with family until we close on the new property.

And, of course, our escrow was delayed. Again.

Tyler's up in Benbow for a couple days trying to get a job.

We're getting ready to head down to LA to help a friend with a film shoot.

Our car is in the shop getting a new catalytic converter. Tyler is borrowing his mom's tiny sedan.

But the window was closing on an opportunity to snag some normally rather expensive Nigerian Dwarf goats. So, Tyler got up rediculously early to pick them up, covered the back seat with a sheet, and will be dropping them with my dad before going back into the restaurant for day two of his trial run.

I know, we're fu***ng nuts. It's always too much all at once. But one thing I can say, no one could accuse us of failing to exploit an opportunity!

Unpopular opinion? Dandelions are probably my favorite flowers. Seriously, they do not get enough respect!

They are bright, cheerful, thrive just about anywhere, and 100% of the plant is edible. They are an important perennial food source for bees and their wide-spreading roots help loosed compacted soil, making nutrients more accessible for companion plants. They even provide ground cover which can help hold in moisture and prevent erosion. They do all of this, and require literally zero care in return.

But rather than celebrate them for the symbol of resilience that they are, we tear them, spray them with poison, and excised from our gardens.

I say no more! Give this underrated plant room to grow and ee what dandelions can do for your yard this spring!

Exciting new developments!

Exciting new developments!

After many years of wanting to, my husband and I have taken the plunge fully into homesteading life. We currently have 10 chickens, 3 ducks, 3 rabbits, 3 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 small humans, and a ton of heirloom seed stock. We are trying to get 5 Nigerian Dwarf Goat, some more ducks, and likely a few additional chickens at the end of the month.
