A couple local corn plots harvested in the area with customers. One of them following the theme of 10-20% yields off of 2 years ago. Armington plot missed the wind damage, but it seems the water damage was a major factor that has limited yields even without the wind. Pattern tile and well drained soils have helped but not as much as you would think with the saturated soils we had in late June.

11” of rain more than the 30 year average for the whole year is part of the story, but really it was the timing of 10+” in June and again in August plus some upper 70 nights mixed in July and August and cloudy days in August also effected the growing season of extreme wet feet, stalk rots, crown rot issues, massive wind damage in August, to aborted kernels and then smaller kernels that also don’t have the kernel weight we have had a fortune of having the last number of years.

Last week before the heat set in checked out a foliar sxs that Nexta is experimenting as a new add to the program. It has 4 dif products in it that help mitigate stress and will be interesting follow up after harvest!

Def had lots of stress this year being too much water to heat stress and one thing that was evident was less nosing back the plants that had the product applied at the post corn pass.

Stay tuned for more information after harvest!

Always get in a rush during cover crop season to stop and take a few pictures but if anybody is interested in cover crops we offer some good blend options or even just simple ones they will winterkill. Some favorite ones..

Oats/radish
Turnips
Cereal rye
Rye and camelina

Also some that produce some nitrogen for the corn crop next year w a mix of legumes and other species.

And if planning any waterway projects this fall we have some waterway mix on hand as well!
