Our Story

Thank you for considering Old Stick Ranch for your Hill Country visit. My name is Matthew and I am your host. I have worked as a freelance magazine photographer here in Texas since 1998. I have had the good fortune of shooting assignments and having my images featured in The Atlantic, Discover, ESPN, Forbes, Fortune, Men's Journal, People, Texas Monthly, Time, Wired, The New York Times Magazine and many more. In February 2014 while perusing real estate listings I decided to sell my home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Austin and buy a languishing 7 acre horse ranch that had sat unoccupied for 2 years. 4 years later with an enormous amount of work, 85% of which I did by myself, it is now home to 1 large friendly dog named Buddy, an ornery female Pygmy Goat whom I call "Cheese," her two male caller friends, Berger and Weldon, and myself. We all hope to welcome you to our home, Old Stick Ranch.

The main house has 3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms and can sleep 10 with seven beds and two couches. There’s a full kitchen, social area, screened in front porch and fire pit area. There is also a 40' Container Home w/rooftop deck that sleeps 5. It can be added for groups over 10 people. The Container can also be rented on its own.

Great place to escape the bustle of city life while still staying close. TheRanch backs up to the 23000 acre Balconies Canyonland Preserve, and due to the lack of light pollution the sky is clear and reveals an abundance of stars and is a stargazers delight. Guests will have full access to the home they choose and 4 of the 7 acres. Owner is available by text or phone call and stays at at the ranch in a dwelling that is not available for short term rental.

Hope to see you soon
