Some of the best parts of hosting at Breath of Dawn are the people who find their way here — and the stories they bring with them.

This week, one of those people was traveling 1,100 miles by skateboard from Mississippi to New York, raising awareness for mental health and su***de prevention in honor of his brother, who died two years ago.

And here's the part that made his stay especially meaningful to me: he actually found Breath of Dawn back in December. While planning this 1,100-mile journey, out of all the places he could have stopped along the way, he had already decided that our little spot on the mountain was somewhere he wanted to spend time.

His actual call to stay with us came last minute. The plan was to pitch his tent at Camp Grassland — until the weather had other ideas. With a pretty serious storm and lightning moving through that evening, sending him out to sleep in a tent just didn't sit right with me.

So, Camp Grassland turned into a night in Cabin Breazy instead.

One of the things I love about having this space is never quite knowing who is going to come up the driveway or what brought them here. Sometimes it's a couple looking for a quiet weekend away. Sometimes it's someone who needs a solo reset. And sometimes it's a man traveling more than a thousand miles on a skateboard for something much bigger than himself.

There's something pretty incredible about knowing that months before he ever arrived, Breath of Dawn had already become one small stop in a much bigger journey.

I'm grateful we got to be that place for him.

That’s exactly what happened at the SWVA Regional Tourism Gathering at Breath of Dawn. 🌄

Hosted at our mountaintop homestead, the gathering brought together tourism professionals, small business owners, lodging operators, outfitters, and other people who are helping shape the future of tourism in Southwest Virginia.

One of the highlights was hearing from Breath of Dawn owner Jessica Monroe, who shared three simple but powerful reminders for anyone navigating small business ownership or leadership:

🌿 Be willing to pivot. Sometimes the path we planned isn’t the path we’re meant to take—and that’s okay.

🎯 Focus on your Top 3. You may have a to-do list a mile long, but identifying the three things that matter most can make the difference between feeling overwhelmed and making real progress.

🤝 Use the resources available to you. You don’t have to build your business alone. Grants, partnerships, tourism organizations, and other resources can help you take your next step.

But perhaps the biggest takeaway from the day was this:

We’re better when we don’t have to do it alone.
