A few weeks ago, I posted about getting this new frost fan ready and into the orchard. I ran it for 2 nights, pushing cold air out and bringing warm air in from above. You can see where the frost was gone from the ground.

2023 was the worst year for fruit loss due to freezing temps. I'm hoping this frost fan will help to save future crops. Freeze expected Monday night.

Many have asked me this winter if the fruit trees are going to be ok. The short answer is yes. The temps need to be -15° and lower to lose this year's peach blossoms. Winter dormant apple trees can withstand even lower temps. In the spring, temps become more critical as buds swell. In February 2016 peaches in most of the North East were lost to a long deep freeze. In 2023 I lost my peach crop to a spring frost/freeze in April and then the whole apple crop was lost after a freeze in May. While there's nothing that can be done for a sub zero winter freeze, there are a few things that can be done in the spring to protect blooming buds from frost in the orchard. Moving cold air out and down hill brings warmer air in from above. Just a few degrees of warmer air can be all that's needed to save the buds and bloom. This winter has been up and down and I expect the spring to be no different. Today I took delivery of a 7' frost fan that can protect about 10 acres of fruit trees. I hope it's not needed but if it is, I'll have fruit this year.

In 2025 the PA-490 land values ballooned up - 2-3-4 times the old rates. PA-490 is probably the single best tool for keeping farm properties in existence because it lowers the tax burden on farm land that requires no town services.

If these new land values don't get revised further back down, there will be a negative impact that will be felt through many economic sectors. Primarily higher food costs, less reinvestment to up grade equipment or expand, the loss of markets due to competition from less expensive states. The list goes on and on.

For me 2023 was a total loss. I lost the peach crop due to a freeze and then the apple crop to a May freeze. I shut the farm stand down for a year. No sales, no income, lost customers. If the taxes on the value of my land were as high as what we have here now, I don't know how I would've made it.

In 2024 we had crazy rains, hail and floods in the state. Many farmers lost everything. Ask them how the barley made it. We need the full support of everyone on this. It's that important.
