Tuckaway Farm

Tuckaway Farm Growing healthy soil, food & community in Seacoast NH. Please call or email for an introduction to our farm.

Tuckaway Farm is a three generation family farm "tucked away" along the Oyster River, just 2 miles from UNH. We have farmed organically for over 50 years, growing vegetables, small fruits, hay, blueberries, mushrooms, grains and oilseed crops. We use draft horse power and no/low-till practices where possible, and rotationally graze our livestock and poultry. We currently operate a credit-system CS

A and Bread Club, and sell to area restaurants, markets, and school districts. We are deeply engaged in open source research and development through farmhack.net, a collaborative community for resilient agriculture. Our ongoing mission at Tuckaway is to support a regenerative energy and food system by providing diverse agricultural products and by practicing agriculture that builds soil, habitat, and community.

Dorn will be at UVM on March 18 discussing Building Commons Enabling Infrastructure for Food Sovereignty: Community-Led Examples of Global Knowledge Sharing for Local Production and Autonomy. How can communities build and share an agricultural knowledge commons of tools, data, designs and governance to better adapt their own food, knowledge, and local food production systems? Link in bio for Zoom registration.
🌱
We’re taking these ideas to heart as Tuckaway Farm expands into Tuckaway Food Commons (TFC) - a growing food hub that brings together farms, food, producers, educators, nonprofits, community organizations and neighbors to strengthen a resilient, equitable, and community-centered Seacoast food system.
🌱
Stay tuned for new collaborations, food enterprises, community-led workshops, and ways to engage 🧡

Saving cherry tomato seeds from potted plants that produced well into October. We kept some from the final harvest in a bowl in the kitchen and they almost all stayed sound & flavorful right up to now. I’m drying the seeds on paper towels rather than fermenting, just for simplicity. A family in town offered us the plants last spring, saying they had been growing them out for many years, having been given their first plants from another neighbor. They told Chuck later in the season that their crop had not done well this year, so it’s nice to know we can return the favor by offering back seed 🌱🍅🥰

We’re so grateful to host another broom making workshop with Bryan Cassidy and on Saturday Nov 22, 1-5. This is a fully hands on workshop, and a really wonderful opportunity to slow down, connect with natural materials and new friends. Bryan also has a lovely new book of poetry in the farm store. Thank you for another wonderful Wild Foods walk on the farm. So appreciative for the knowledge you share and new people connecting with the land and each other. It’s been too dry for much mushroom activity, but we visited with basswood trees, shagbark hickory, oak, black birch, sweet fern, milkweed, nettles, black cherry, autumn olive, wild grapes, black locust, sumac, and lots of other good nutrition and flavors. I am definitely planning to infuse some sweet fern cream to try with the last of the blueberries, and hanging bundles to dry.

Hot weather pollinator strip thriving 🌼 but still distressing to see so little insect life overall… these plantings can really help, but the causes are so much bigger than individuals and requires real effort on the policy side to impact land clearing/loss of habitat, climate change and resulting increase in natural disasters, industrial agriculture’s reliance on pesticides, any tons of other co-factors. I can count the butterflies I’ve seen this year on one hand, and miss the buzzing that used to keep us regular company. In the meantime, we will continue to plant these strips, and encourage people to check out and NRCS resources on building pollinator habitat in yards, gardens, and farms.
