Allio's Orchard

Allio's Orchard 4th Generation former dairy farm turned apple orchard & soon to be FLOWER FARM!

Well, next year I will not be planting flowers I am sorry to say. The cost of lime and fertilizer and diesel fuel and gas for the tractors has made it completely unrealistic. This is the same reason you are paying more for food because the current economy has that trickle-down effect, everything costs more. There will have to a major change in the economic situation of our country before I can afford to do anything like that again. And it is sad to say with the current political situation I am not sure that it will get better. We just need to do better as Americans in deciding who to elect to run our country. So with that, I will tell you to do your research and think for yourself, not let the news media make up your mind. Research what it costs a farmer to plant and grow a crop. Be educated and do your homework. Because I will be completely honest with you. I paid $400.00 in flower seeds. $250.00 in lime, $150.00 in fertilizer, and $4.00 a gallon for diesel fule for the tractor that I just spent 5 years paying off, but I won't bore you with the other equipment that it took to plow, till, and spread the lime and fertilizer. I just wanted to do something good for my community. So, it is unrealistic, and I know the farmers who grow your food and raise the meat you eat feel that way more than me, and that gets passed on to consumers like you.

I am sad to report that as of today the end of July, we have no flowers blooming, Money, and time spent with no enjoyment for anyone to see the blooms.

I have a long time to think about next year if I plant again, a lot would depend on the interest. I may just put it back to a clover field. I work on a lot of projects all year long, so time is a factor.

Well, I have to say it now, I have been concerned about the wild flowers for a few weeks, and I still only have a few blooms here and there. I am not really sure why, but they should be blooming well by now, other than too much rain early on may have affected the seeds. I planted at the end of May, but this year is not looking good so far.

Almost all of our old apple trees are loaded with apples this year, I am hopeful that we can harvest this fall. These apples are mostly Northern spies, Wagner, and golden delishes.

I have already started getting inquiries about photography sessions. We are expecting blooms to start sometime in August. I ask photographers to contact us in advance for a date and time, and we ask for 50.00 per hour for as many people or sets as you want to shoot. Thank you all in advance, I will post dates and times that are already filled.

As I was mowing around the field today I came upon some milkweed, before I got my phone out it was covered in monarch butterflies. Wildflower seeds have milkweed seeds in them because they are essential to the survival of the monarch butterflies, needless to say, we have so many around the farm now.

Flowers are growing, I planted the last week of May hoping for an early bloom but that just depends on the weather, So far it has been favorable. I need to mow some areas, we had some equipment issues this spring and with the rain the fields have gotten out of hand, but we are all fixed up and ready to go. Looking forward to seeing the blooms...and as always the deer are eating whatever sunflowers I planted. Oh well, deer need to eat too so we can eat them!

If you stop by to visit our wildflowers, you just never know what you might see...Tonight we had a visit from a bald eagle, it had it's dinner of wild turkey. You just have to love and respect the wilds. I have lived here pretty much my whole life with the exception to my military service, and it never ceases to amaze me of the beauty and peacefulness.

Well, 2024 planting is done. I was able to plant 5/12 rows the length of the field with 7 lbs of seed. It is a bigger field so I knew I would not be able to plant it all, but the truth is I just like being out on my tractor and this gives me a good excuse. Donations will remain the same as last year, and with your continued support and generosity hopefully I can keep expanding the field. This year is a mix of wildflowers and zinnas along with about 2 lbs of sunflowers left over from last year. If the the deer don't eat the sunflowers all the better, but I am not going to stress over it like I did last year, so many deer and they love sunflowers as they are high in protein. But as I said, we are planted ahead of schedule and your generous donations will only help me expand. The flowers are annuals, meaning I have to plant them every year. Have a happy spring and enjoy your summer!
