HILLSBORO FARMER’S MARKET @ 1-3PM TODAY

Lettuce and kale greens are out for now, but Chinese Red Meat radishes are in! Better known as “watermelon radishes”, these guys are a milder radish that can be versatile. We used massive one to make mini fish tacos. we had some customers tell us that they are great on veggie burgers.

HILLSBORO FARMER’S MARKET SUNDAY FROM 4-6PM

Here comes the heat wave!

Us and of all our fellow outdoor workers will have to be thoughtful of the heat over these next couple of days. I think we’ll be taking some time to bulk up on cucumber juice!

We grow three kinds of cucumbers -

Anoga Jibi (a Japanese variety) is a sweet, thin skinned slicing cucumber with a high water content.

Beit Alpha (a Persian variety) is another thin skinned slicing cucumber that’s lower in water content and high in crispness!

And our most prolific - Boston Picklings! These vines don’t stop and the cucs like to hide behind their leaves. We try to pick all young when the thicker skin is softest.

We’ll be bringing all these varieties to Hillsboros Farmer’s Market Sunday from 1-3pm

🇱🇧 ‘ABYAD KOUUUUSA 🇱🇧

This summer squash is my dinner muse these days. Also known as Lebanese squash or white / grey squash or sometimes just kousa - ‘abyad kousa (قرع أبيض) roughly translates to “white squash”. Uniquely, this crop is more widely considered a fruit than a vegetable and grows tendrils from the plant.

The flavor of the crop is a trip in it’s self. Starchy and crisp when uncooked, but a whole new flavor profile once cooked! When cooked, these squashes bring a sweet profile while staying firmer than expected. Dehydrate or slow roast for sweet veggie chips. Add to quiches or pot pies for a firm bite. Stuff with rice and minced meat then bake in a tomato sauce for a complete meal. Caramelize in a veg torte. Chop and quick broil for a sweet kick in any pasta dish.

This is versatile veg that you will have fun exploring!

🦋 NEXT MARKET 🦋
FRIDAY, WATERFORD VILLAGE, 4-6PM

Growing produce chemical-free in field we have a plethora to say about bugs. Yet, can’t help but be a little jealous of bugs… If I had MY choice, I would ALSO choose to hang out among the veggies and have this awesome view of the world. We’re always so happy to see the good bugs doing the good work out in the fields. Bugs aren’t always in our favor, but we appreciate the ones that make our lives a little easier.

With the start of the Women’s World Cup, our minds are seeing all the circular objects in the world. We’re eagerly waiting for our tomato crop to reach first harvest. The color starting to emerge on these little black strawberries have us holding our breath just like Lindsey Horan’s goal in the 77th minute! 🤩

We’ll be back out at the Old Stone School off of Charles Town Pike tomorrow from 1 to 3 pm. Come by to see our starting line up for the day!

While these hot, clear days have been nice for getting chores done, it would be really awesome to get a hearty drop of rain. Matured herbs are finally finding their way into the plots to start going wild. Maybe it’ll inspire the clouds to go wild, too!

Can anyone guess what this little seedling is?? 🌱

We spent Earth Day racing against the incoming rain in putting up a greenhouse - an incredible gift from a wonderful neighbor that another awesome neighbor helped build! We find ourselves lucky to be surrounded by a rural community that does nothing but support and cheer us on in our endeavors (free chicken eggs MIGHT had been promised 🤫).

In what seems to be our never ending project of putting up farm infrastructure, the greenhouse will be the new home of our smaller seedlings. Moving along in our plans and projects is an awesome catalyst in getting us excited about what’s to come.

Capturing even just a snap shot of global produce is tricky, but stick with us. It’ll be worth the wait! 🌎

It feels so fitting that blooms es**rt us through all the spring celebrations.

Life with the land is never fool proof. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by to-do lists, schedules, and far flung plans. The blooms on our acreage are simple reminders to cultivate hopefulness versus anxiety.

So, we’ll take our time to step back, take a breather, cross our fingers, and hope for a good cherry crop from the couple of trees we’re lucky to have!

Wishing everyone moments of rest and connection through these spring days. 🌸
