Late Summer on the Mountain

The vines are heavy now,
their summer work nearly done,
grapes warming beneath the afternoon sun,
waiting for the moment when they are ready.

The mountain is still green,
but change whispers at the edges.
A cooler breeze arrives in the evening,
and daylight slips away a little sooner.

There is wine in the glass,
laughter drifting across the vineyard,
and nowhere we need to be
but right here.

Soon, harvest will call.
The leaves will turn,
and another vintage will begin its journey.

But today belongs to late summer,
to long views and lingering afternoons,
to one more glass before the season changes.

Here’s to savoring what remains. 🍇🍷

🍇 Recipes from the Vineyard: White Wine Steamed Clams 🍷

Fresh littleneck clams, garlic, butter, lemon, and a splash of Virginia wine. Sometimes the simplest summer dishes are the best!

What You’ll Need:
🦪 2 lbs. fresh littleneck clams, cleaned
🍷 1 cup dry white wine
🧄 3–4 cloves garlic, minced
🧈 3 Tbsp. butter
🍋 Juice of ½ lemon
🌿 2 summer leeks or 3–4 scallions, thinly sliced
🥖 Crusty French bread for serving

To Make:
Melt the butter in a wide pot over medium heat. Add the garlic and leeks or scallions and sauté until fragrant. Pour in the white wine and lemon juice, then add the clams. Cover and steam for about 5–8 minutes, gently shaking the pot occasionally, until the clams open. Discard any that remain closed.

Spoon the clams into bowls with plenty of that garlicky, buttery wine broth and serve with crusty French bread for dipping.

🥂 The Willowcroft Pairing:
Pour a chilled glass of Willowcroft Cold Steel Chardonnay alongside. Its bright acidity and crisp fruit are a natural match for the briny clams, lemon, garlic, and butter.

And yes, you can use the Cold Steel Chardonnay in the pot and in your glass. We highly recommend both. 😉🍷

🍷 Funday Friday: Wine Wisdom We Can Get Behind

We’ve been doing some very serious research into wine this week. Here’s what we learned:

🍇 The Pun Pour
I told my wine it was aging beautifully. Now it won’t stop bragging about its “full-bodied” confidence.

🍷 The Q&A Sip
Q: Why did the grape stop in the middle of the road?
A: It ran out of juice. But don’t worry, it’s fermenting a comeback.

🥂 The Observational Pour
Wine tasting notes always say things like “hints of leather and tobacco.” We just want to know: Who’s out there chewing on cowboy boots for comparison? 🤠

And finally, a little Wine Tip for Life:

💡 Always keep a bottle of wine for emergencies. And by “emergencies,” we mean Thursdays.

Happy Funday Friday from Willowcroft! Come see us this weekend. We promise the wine is better than the jokes. 😉🍷

🍷 Wine Tip Wednesday: What’s Old is New Again

One of winemaking’s most ancient techniques is finding new life with modern winemakers: aging wine in amphora.

Amphora are clay or terracotta vessels that have been used to make and age wine for thousands of years. Unlike oak barrels, clay is neutral, so it doesn’t add flavors like vanilla, toast, or spice. Instead, the porous vessel lets tiny amounts of oxygen interact with the wine as it ages, while letting the character of the grape and vineyard take center stage.

Why are winemakers rediscovering amphora?

🍇 Pure fruit character – Clay doesn’t impart its own flavor to the wine.
🍷 Gentle oxygen exposure – The porous vessel can help soften and develop the wine.
🏺 Texture – Aging on the lees can contribute additional body and texture.
🌿 A sense of place – With less influence from the aging vessel, the grape and vineyard can shine through.

It’s a fascinating example of how sometimes the next big thing in wine is actually something winemakers were doing thousands of years ago.

Wine Tip: The next time you see “amphora-aged” or “clay-aged” on a tasting menu, give it a try. Compare it with an oak-aged wine made from the same or a similar grape and see what differences you notice. 🍷

🍇 Did You Know? Loudoun Wine History Started Right Here! 🍷

In 1984, Willowcroft Farm Vineyards became Loudoun County’s first winery, helping plant the roots for what has grown into one of Virginia’s most celebrated wine regions.

For more than 40 years, we’ve been growing grapes high atop the Catoctin Ridge and crafting wines that have earned recognition in Virginia and nationally. And through all those years, our historic Civil War-era red barn has remained at the heart of the Willowcroft experience.

Today, we’re proud to still be Loudoun County’s Original Winery, offering the same relaxed, welcoming approach to Virginia wine that started it all.

Come up to the mountain, step inside the red barn, and taste a little Loudoun wine history for yourself. 🍷🍇
