Just a husband and wife, two boxers (our four-legged fur babies) and some chickens on about 3 acres of land. We had a very small garden – enough for a few tomatoes, peppers, herbs and lettuce in raised beds. Call it a hobby with the benefit of putting some delicious, fresh food on the table. Sometimes even having a little extra to give to friends and family.
Then an opportunity. The dream of a lifetime, if you will. The 7+ acres of adjoining land goes up for sale. The many years of having an interest in this land has finally entered into our realm of possibilities. And we jump at the chance! The original benefit of buying the land was to qualify for reduced taxes in the “Clean & Green” act....then COVID.
Acres = Homestead. So if you have your own acres of land to be self-sufficient, and grow your own vegetables, fruit, and herbs, there will be less need for grocery stores, right? Of course! But why stop there? If there’s enough land to supply our needs – PLUS the needs of others – why not grow for more than just two people?
So what does “organic” mean at Breezy Hills Farm? As a consumer, we buy certified organic when possible at the grocery store. But being “certified” on our own farm is a whole other level. This means being audited by the FDA to ensure everything is done according to their rules and regulations. Rest assured, we follow organic practices. ZERO pesticides. ZERO chemicals. Companion planting to reduce pests and increase yields. Organic seeds and plants when possible.
As we continue to “grow” and develop our homestead and farm, we want to share our hard work with you. And so it begins....please follow us on our dirty journey.
