The sleepiest downy wood pe**er fledgling. I found it napping on the road to our back field-popped it over into the brush and it was gone when I passed by-I spotted one looking just like it on a suet feeder nearby-hoping that little one is all squared away!

This video makes me laugh, hard. I filmed it while watching , an absolutely hilarious coming of age British show. Apparently actor Connor Swindells ,who plays Adam in the show, did this to make the director laugh and they added it in the show. I have to say his technique is impeccable. Mine needs some work.

It is already stupid hot today so I hope this brightens your day a little!

Thanks to the lovely who I met for the first time just the other day. She came bearing morel mushrooms from her yard and offered to do some detailed drone mapping of the property. A dream!!

One of my favorite things about farming is getting to meet people from all walks of life with such varied lives, work and passions.

Spent my Saturday rehabbing our hand tools! Some of them required a lot of extra work using wood glue trying to rescue delaminating handles, but after a gnarly splinter in my hand last night I’d had enough! Basically, I used my brand spanking new palm sander from Barrows Hardware, sanded using 80 and 120 grit and finished with linseed oil. These poor tools are so dry they’ll need about 300 coats but one or two more will have to do. Regrettably I do not maintain our tools very well. After this ordeal I’m committed to building an awning for the tool wall that is otherwise exposed to the elements. 10/10 recommend listening to your favorite dance music while sanding all day. Made the time fly by!

Spring has really sprung. It’s raining cats and dogs out there, the birds are nesting in crazy places and tweeting fervently, and we, too, are very busy. Today I soaked through my shoes before 10am, mowed down all our winter greens in the high tunnels to make way for summer loving crops like cucumbers, sweet peppers and tomatoes…we restocked the farm store, cleaned up some storage areas, repotted eggplant after rodents tore it up looking for the remaining summer squash seeds they had missed (I reused the potting soil since it had only been ONE day since we had seeded the squash and the rodents found and ate every single seed (rude!) phew! 😅

Happy Mother’s Day! Though we all may not celebrate, or see our mothers or have one on this earthly plane, we all have a mother. May we honor where we have come from-those that birthed us, those that raise us ,and those that cherish us now as a mother would.

The insect netting is working! Within a week of planting out our caterpillar tunnel I noticed massive amounts of flea beetles. It seemed so early. I panicked! They will decimate a crop-particularly early spring greens in the brassica family-arugula, radish, poc choy, kale-literally everything in this tunnel. I sprayed Surround-a kaolin clay powder mixed with water and a sticker/spreader to help it stick to the waxy leaves of kale, put in sticky traps, and laid insect netting-it has to be done on hoops or the beetles can eat through the netting whenever it touches. The video shows the netting and sticky traps covered in flea beetles. The greens resembles experienced minimal damage. Next time-cover immediately after planting. It’s the only way. If we didn’t do any of this, we’d have to spray (certified organic) pesticides-which we try to avoid as much as possible.
