Crop Loss Part 2

This year was hard on our tulips. Warmer than usual winter lead to sprouting & budding too early. Then 3-4 days of very cold weather made our later tulips not bloom at all.

We lost a good half of our tulips. Cost us money this year. Thank goodness for our ranunculus, anemones, & peonies for helping pull us out of a rut - even though we also experienced a crop loss with those flowers.

We are really going to have to consider whether tulips are worth the risk for 2027.

It’s much easier than you think. Don’t over think it!

1. Find the eye
2. Dig a spot 4-5 inches deep
3. Plant horizontally with eye up
4. Cover
5. Don’t water till you see a sprout

If you already have a tuber that sprouted, plant the same as above!

Give your tubers some time to emerge - some are very slow growers.

Then enjoy one of the prettiest flowers you’ll ever grow!

You know what’s always reliable? Peonies. You will always be my favorite, my reliable friend.

Crop loss

Not the funnest topic to talk about. But it happens. Mother Nature reminded us she was in charge this winter & spring. Warmer than usual winter temps & then a severe cold blast really messed with our spring crop.

We decided to dig out the ranunculus & anemones that just aren’t big enough to bloom in this short season. Once temps stay consistent in the 80s, these flowers will go dormant.

Not a complete loss I guess. You plant 1 ranunculus corm, & you’ll dig out multiple. Each one we dug had at least 3 new corms.

We’ll put them in storage, wake them up in February, & will hopefully have a high tunnel to plant them in later winter.
