Everyone knows New Idea built some of the best manure spreaders ever made, but not everyone knows where the name came from.

Back in 1899, an Ohio inventor named Joseph Oppenheim came up with a better way to spread manure. At the time, most farmers were still hauling and dumping it by hand. His machine spread it evenly across the field, saving a tremendous amount of labor and making better use of valuable fertilizer.

That invention became known as the "New Idea" manure spreader, and eventually the company itself took on the name.
Over the next several decades, New Idea built everything from horse-drawn spreaders to ground-driven and PTO models. Many of them are still working today, and some have been on the same farms for generations.

That's why I started this page.

My goal is to research these machines, document them, preserve their history, and help keep them working for years to come. Whether you're restoring one, still spreading manure with one, or just have an old family spreader sitting in the weeds, I'd love to see it.

If you've got a New Idea spreader, post a picture below and tell us what model you have.

Research. Restore. Preserve.
