Our Little Farm Life 6-15-17
In 2009 we purchased this little property with its hills, humps and a hole with no plans other than to have no close neighbors. In the spring of 2015 I convinced Jay to have a small coop area added to an outbuilding we were purchasing and with a little help from friends; we got a lovely run added on to the end. We named them Kevin, Bobby, Stuart an
d Margo (Minions movie had just came out…LOL) the Sizzles were the cutest things the grands and I had ever seen. SO the mission then was to keep them alive!!! I then purchased six chicks (laying hens). At this point the critters started coming (c***s and possums), so I needed a guard dog. I started looking at a Great Pyrenees puppy. Sounded like a good idea…LOL…so that’s what we got. A friend gave me six grown laying hens SO then we started getting eggs!!! Needless to say by fall I was hooked…!! Spring came around again and I was buying chicks (lots of chicks). I lost a couple chicks, then lost a few more and I cried …it was a new, emotional and exciting experience….then I figured out I’m a big girl and the journey continued. We then decided to put a fence around our little property of hills, humps and a hole and that opened up a new world of possibilities!! I had become very familiar with Craigslist by that time and found my first two GOATS (before the fence was even finished)!!! It’s been almost two years since buying those first four chicks. We now have 15 goats. Five that have been born here, with four of the five in the last three weeks!! We have Myotonic goats (fainting), Nigerian Dwarf goats and Mini Nubian goats. We have three sheep, one blackbelly hair sheep and two South Down Babydoll sheep. We have three dogs, a Great Pyrenees, an Australian Shephard puppy and a Yorkie. We have three cats with 80+ birds…chickens (about a dozen different breeds), turkeys, guineas and ducks!!! We now have several coops, several small houses and nice little barn.
We’ve had some success hatching babies in an incubator and sold some. And we plan to do more in the future. We sell fresh eggs to our family, friends and neighbors.
It has, so far, been a great adventure. We have received lots of good help and great advice. We have met lots of new people and made many new friends. We have had dozens of visitors and look forward to many more!!! Jay says “It’s a labor of love. He labors because he loves me!!!!” but secretly he loves it too. Either way I truly do appreciate it!!!
