Ever wonder how we grow our shoots and microgreens? These images show the evolution from soaking and rinsing the seed, thru planting, stacking for germination, growth period, harvest, wash & pack, and finally a ready for market product.
The timing of growing varies based on the time of year and the amount of daylight per day. On average our shoots take 2 weeks but in the height of summer it can be as quick as 10 days and in the depth of winter up to 45 days. We grow them year round in a minimally heated greenhouse.
The period of light deprivation also varies with the time of year. We stack the trays, add weight on top for anywhere from 2 days to a week, again dictated by the amount of natural daylight available.
We do not supplement with any artificial light.
Our soil mix we use is organic approved Promix, a peat moss based mix with a small amount of compost in the mix and biofungicide. This provides enough fertility for the duration the shoots or microgreens are growing. All of our seed is certified organic and approved for shoot and microgreen production. We source of seeds from Johnny's Selected Seeds and High Mowing Organic Seeds.
