We spent the morning harvesting our first wave of morels for the season, and this is only a fraction of what we gathered today! Though not necessarily a formal “medicinal” fungus, morels are incredibly delicious and they grow all over east Tennessee. Sometimes, you can find these in your own back yard. Early Spring is a great time for morels to appear. When the temperatures are in the 50’s and conditions are wet (like now), look around poplar, sycamore, hickory, ash, elm, and fruit trees in woodland areas. Morels also love loamy soil high in calcium and lime deposits. If you have a rock pile or gravel on your property (in a woodsy area) you can often find morels coming up right out of the rocky soil. Be careful to avoid the "false morel" which can be toxic.
