Planting season is officially underway.

I bought a Greenstalk planter to try out this year. I planted broccoli, bush beans, and different varieties of lettuce in it yesterday. I'm not putting all my faith in it until it's been tested, so I'll still be planting these things in the garden and in pots.

We also harvested our first asparagus spears! I wasn't sure how they would do because I didn't plant them as deep as they prefer, so I was surprised that they came up this year. One got pretty tall and I wasn't sure how the flavor would be because of that, but it was delicious. I'll have to keep an eye on the others that have popped up, but aren't a harvestable size yet.

There's still a LOT of work to do and a lot of seeds to be planted. We have ordered a surplus of seeds so check with us to see what plants we have available and hopefully we can save you some money on your plants this year.

Here's a fun fact for ya.

Some breeds of chickens can be sexed (meaning you can tell if they are boys or girls) as young as 3 weeks old! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

It's true!

This is only true for SOME breeds though. Not ALL breeds.

Usually, if they are a single comb chicken, you can tell.

Pictured below are Rhode Island Reds. They are about 5 weeks old in the pictures.

Notice that the male has a very large comb (the fleshy thing on top of the head) and practically no tail feathers. His wattles (the fleshy things under his chin) are already coming in. Also, his wattles and comb are starting to turn red.

The female has practically no wattles or comb and has lots of tail feathers. Her comb and wattles will come in later on, but they likely won't be as large as the male. Around 18 weeks old, her comb and wattles will start to turn red as she starts getting ready to begin laying eggs.

So remember this after you buy your spring chicks this year and you'll be able to tell earlier on if you've got crowers or egg layers.

This weekend, I made homemade fruit roll ups in the dehydrator!

I smeared a thick layer of no sugar added applesauce๐ŸŽ on parchment paper (non-stick side up) on each rack of the dehydrator.

Turned it on 135๐ŸŒก๏ธ degrees and let it do it's thing for about 8 hours.

When the liquid was gone and the applesauce was solid and peeled off the paper, I removed the racks, rolled the parchment paper semi-loosely, and cut with clean, sharp scissorsโœ‚๏ธ then stored the roll ups in zipper bags.

The roll ups peel right off the parchment paper as long as you have the correct side up.

The kids love them so I won't need a long-term storage option. ๐Ÿ˜‹

Lots of stuff is coming on!

Cucumbers and squash are in abundance! We've already had our first squash casserole.

The watermelons and cantaloupes are doing the best they've ever done!

The green beans are being a little slow so I'll probably have to replant some more of them.

Only one variety of the leaf lettuce came up so I'll plant some more of it too.

The blueberries and blackberries are producing too and it looks like the elderberries will be fruiting for the first time this year, which is pretty exciting!

We've got to replant another couple blueberry bushes that died, but I'm thinking about cloning one of the bushes that I have now because the berries are super sweet. And since we have the greenhouse now, cloning should be easier.

We grow a lot of food, but we also kill a lot of plants in the process! Just keep at it. Persistency and determination are KEY!

Also, we have told a lot of people about a new tool we found this year. It has several names, one of which is a "stirrup hoe". It's a w**ding tool that makes w**ding the garden so much easier!

Last year, we were out w**ding the garden for hours every day! This year, we w**d it about once a week and it looks far better than it did last year! It has saved us so much time and energy!! They sell them at Walmart, Lowes Hardware, just about anywhere where gardening tools are sold. We highly recommend them!!

The strawberry plants are finished for the year.

The blueberries are starting to ripen. I've picked a couple hands full in the last 2 days.

Looks like the elderberries are going to be producing for the first time this year.

And there's lots of pretty flowers blooming

I planted so many flower varieties this year, but I killed the majority of them.

I'll have to order more seeds and try again.

This is why I plant low maintenance, perennial flowers.

Because, believe it or not, I don't actually have a green thumb.๐Ÿ‘Ž

Don't mind me. I'm just watering the garden. ๐Ÿคช
