When amateur eventer Braden Speck heads to the start box in his five-star debut at next week's Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event, he'll have a different timeline in the back of his mind than most riders: Kentucky will be the final event for the aspiring veterinarian, whose career choice was shaped by a series of childhood tragedies, and his longtime partner before Speck takes a hiatus from competing to tackle a different kind of challenge: vet school at the University of Pennsylvania.
