Remember this girl?!

My miracle girl. 🥹

Back in February, one of my does-Brûlée went into labor. She was my first goat to kid this past season and I suspected something was wrong from the get-go. When she started to pass pinkish grey malodorous fluid- I knew there was trouble.. I called one of my vets and my good friend Mary. Both told me I had to go inside and check it out….

I’ll spare you all the gory details but in the end, there were three rotten mummified kids, a miracle doe kid, and a C-section, which produced another partially modified kid. 5 babies!!! Two days later- I lost the momma- Brûlée.

Nathaniel and I rallied to keep this girl alive. There were a few times where I thought we were going to lose her and I would cry, “ I just need her to live!!!”

Well here she is in all her princess glory..and goodness is she something else.

I’m just going to post this- and then I am going to let it go…

Things are tight.

We need to make a payment on our barn, fix the floor in the barn as it’s been flooding, buy hay for the winter while parts of the country are in a drought and diesel and fertilizer prices are/were high. We need a new tractor…

The list goes on, folks.

The other day I decided to post my beloved peacocks- a pair that I’ve had for 7-8 ish years for sale to help lessen the financial burden and perhaps free up some extra money so we can start to chip away at some of these things.

Under normal circumstances- I would have NEVER sold them. Over the years- I’ve tried to sell them when things got a little tight- but no one ever wanted to pay remotely what they are worth.

Things being what they are- I offered them a bit lower than what I should have…

I had quite a few inquiries- I was not interested in selling them individually- I wanted them to go together and was relieved when a friend said she would buy them. A good home is ALWAYS a priority over anything else for our animals.

We made arrangements, first for Friday and then for Saturday.

I want to inject this part of the story- because it’s important and FORESHADOWING….

On Saturday, I went to visit my son in Huntsville to help him shop for his wedding. Over lunch, I explained to him how being in a fast paced place stresses me out and that people have worn me down over the years… maybe it’s been my job in healthcare? but I prefer the quietness and the solitude of the farm. I prefer the company of my animals over the company of almost all people. He explained that he is quite the opposite and he loves people. It made me feel bad- guilty… maybe I am wrong to feel this way about people😕

While I was in Huntsville- this individual came and picked up my birds and paid my husband and was on her way.

Wouldn’t you know that less than 3 hours later- all three of those birds are posted in various farm sales groups all over FB asking DOUBLE what I asked for them?!!!

Oh my effin heart. The heartbreak. The feelings of betrayal. I trusted this person… I thought I sent them to a GOOD HOME!!!

This is the ugly not fun part of livestock. This is the part that I dread the most. Selling. We are not some little farm trying to make a buck off of breeding animals. No sir. We take this business seriously. We don’t breed “mini cows” and sell them for $30,000 each because that’s a damn SCAM. We don’t breed unhealthy animals and hope we’re going to make $25 from it!!!!

No sir. This farm is all about building. Building a respectable herd of AHCA cattle that we can be proud of… building a beautiful herd of ADGA goats that people are proud to own… that put milk in the pail and ribbons on the wall. This place is NOT about making a dollar!!! It’s about building dreams and working hard and doing whatever it takes and how DARE YOU COME HERE AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT!!!!

I’ll take crazy chickens for $1000, Alex!!!

Because it’s been that kind of day- WHY NOT?!!
