The season we’ve anticipating for a while now is officially upon us here at YVF. We’ve had just a light sprinkle of early calves up until this point, but thanks to warmer weather this past week driving the frost out of the ground followed up by rain/ snow mixture last night primed the perfect muddy conditions to kick things off in true calving weather fashion! While I sit here after midnight, seat laid back watching a heifer lick off her fresh calf, while waiting on a recipe cow to have hers, meanwhile feeling the satisfaction of a couple others who where born in the past few hours that are penned in holding pens who have already nursed and are snuggled down in deep bedding feeling satisfied and cozy with their entrance into this world I can’t help but think how these times are bitter sweet… Bitter because unless you’ve been through it it’s hard to know the toll it takes on a person’s body, emotions, spouse and family at times over the next couple of months. Sweet because it’s the time we get to see all our hard work come into fruition! The excitement to see what the genetics we put together are going to give us this year, the joy of watching all the new baby’s come and seeing the rewards of our hard work grow! So to all the cattlemen and women out there who are going through it already, just getting started or anticipating it- may the weather be ever in your favor, your momma’s be great, calves jump up and nurse, may your coffee be hot, your loved ones patient and most of all be careful out there and watch your back! God bless
