At Ease Homestead At Ease Homestead, a small veteran managed homestead. Two old Marines At Ease living our best lives! Leonard has been our home for just over ten years.

Hello and welcome to the At Ease Homestead (previously known as Clucks and Quacks)

I’m Toni and along with my husband Bob we have a small homestead in Leonard, Michigan. Prior to that we lived in Oxford for thirteen years. We're both from the east coast. I'm from NJ and he's from PA. The Marine Corps brough us to Michigan in 1995 where I completed my last tour of duty. We have two grown children and two beautiful granddaughters. The eldest makes occasional appearances in my posts. I love gardening, food preservation, cooking and raising poultry- chickens, ducks, guinea fowl, turkeys and a sole goose. I have a running joke that after becoming an empty nester I had to find a different kind of nest. I started raising poultry in 2017. A dozen birds has grown, and I have loved every minute of it. In 2022 we added forest raised pork to the homestead as well. We thoroughly enjoyed having pigs and plan to continue raising them seasonally. Eventually we plan to add dairy goats and other small livestock. Here you will find posts and updates sharing critter shenanigans, a bit of gardening, home food preservation and pantry stocking information along with general small scale homesteading that prioritizes stewardship. The At Ease Homestead is our little holding that sustains our family, provides us an opportunity to learn as we grow and connect with simple things that bring us joy and a bit of good healthy dirt under our nails.

In the spirit of sheet pan suppers but hear me out, a cast iron skillet bc the cleanup is so easy.

From the garden - bell peppers (full size and minis), sweet cherry peppers, jalapenos, onions, tiny taters and a handful of green beans. I added the last package of homemade jalapeno bratwurst from a former pig harvest. Everything is tossed in a bit of bacon fat to roast except the beans. They were blanched and will be tossed in at the last minute.

I will probably add a dollop of fermented sauerkraut when serving. This will be a one hundred percent homegrown meal except for the salt used to season the veggies and ferment the kraut!

This morning's collection (2 dozen) is available.

When claiming it's helpful to include your preferred pickup window. If I'm not able to accommodate that time I'll message you to work out an alternative.

It's been a bit disheveled here all week. We had 27 windows, 3 entry doors and 3 door walls replaced.

There's furniture out of order, lots of dust and clean up that still needs done. On the bright side we have windows and doors that we've never been able to use that are now fully functional.

There are a few final touches that will be completed next week but the windows look great! Maybe next year we can do the siding. The roof and windows stretched us this year. We do need new gutters if anyone can recommend someone. Ideally a small local independent company.

Chicken noodle soup tonight from one of our broilers, noodles I made from goose eggs earlier this summer, garden onions, garlic a few string beans and a dragons tongue pepper bc my sinuses are irritated. Soup is medicine IMO.

The weather forecast looks promising but the reality is that our growing season is coming to an end very soon. I'm pruning back all of the tomatoes in the high tunnel to encourage the current fruit to ripen.

This morning I found just a few tomato hornworms but one made me especially happy. This poor guy is toast bc a braconid wasp had laid her eggs that are embedded under the hornworm's skin. The larvae will hatch and consume the worm from the inside out and then form a cacoon around it. It's been awhile since I've seen them. This is a reminder, please don't spray. A natural ecosystem has ways of balancing itself if we allow it.

Unfortunately I've spied a few grasshoppers this year. I could freak out about them but not only do the chickens enjoy them but I've also noticed more praying mantis this year too. I'm going to trust that the praying mantis and free ranging chickens have my back here.
