He is risen ✝️
I serve a risen Savior,
He’s in the world today.
I know that He is living,
whatever men may say.
I see His hand of mercy,
I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him,
He’s always near.
Refrain:
He lives, He lives!
Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me
along life’s narrow way.
He lives, He lives, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart!
In all the world around me
I see His loving care,
And tho’ my heart grows weary
I never will despair;
I know that He is leading
thro’ all the stormy blast,
The day of His appearing
will come at last. [Refrain]
Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian,
lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs
to Jesus Christ the King!
The Hope of all who seek Him,
the Help of all who find,
None other is so loving,
so good and kind. [Refrain]
—Hymn author: Alfred Henry Ackley, 1933
Alfred Henry Ackley was born in 1887 in Pennsylvania and showed early musical talent. He studied music in New York City and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, learning piano, cello, and composition.
Ackley later returned to the United States to attend Westminster Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1914. He served as a pastor in Pennsylvania and later preached in California.
While preaching in California, Ackley encountered a young Jewish man who asked, “Why should I worship a dead Jew?” Ackley responded passionately, “He lives! I tell you, He is not dead, but lives here and now! Jesus Christ is more alive today than ever before. I can prove it by my own experience, as well as the testimony of countless thousands!”
This moment inspired him to write He Lives, a hymn that testifies to the living Christ and the hope of the Resurrection.
✝️
I fully intended to write a reflection worthy of this hymn. But grief is a strange thing.
Easter is a holiday I often spent with my brother. This is the first one without him after his passing in September, and even surrounded by my family, I felt that absence acutely again. We all miss him so very much.
And yet, somehow, this hymn feels even more fitting in my grief today. I do not grieve in despair, as one who has no hope. And that is because of the Resurrection. Jesus was not defeated by death. He lives!
Because He lives, I know His promises are true.
Because He lives, I know I will see my brother again.
Because He lives, I know the grave does not have the final word.
I know my risen Savior has walked with me through some of the most difficult days—comforting me, guiding me, and carrying me when I could not go on. And I know He will continue to be with me all the days of my life.
You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
— 1 Peter 1:3
“Death has been swallowed up in victory.
‘Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?’”
— 1 Corinthians 15:54–55
“He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.”
— Matthew 28:6
