About Springhouse Farm
Springhouse Farm has been in our family since 1886 where it began as a small dairy farm. The springhouse, which still stands today, was where the milk cans were stored to keep the milk cold. We thought “Springhouse Farm” was a fitting name because of its importance to the farm’s everyday life. While the farmstead passed through many generations, so did its purpose. It ranged

from tending a dairy cow herd, raising chickens and pigs, to growing sweet corn for the local cannery, just to name a few. After the dairy ceased to operate, the farm shifted to the raising of beef cattle. Over the past 15 years we have been building up our herd of black angus based cows. Most recently we have transitioned to grass fed cattle as a desire to produce lean beef with an excellent taste and quality. Our beef cattle consume a strict vegetarian diet consisting of pasture grass for the spring, summer and fall seasons. We take pride in feeding our cattle with the hay that we cut and bale to ensure a high quality and nutritious crop. Producing quality beef is our passion. Have us for dinner.

We chopped first cutting alfalfa/grass and filled the silo! Not too often you can look out of the top of the silo from standing on the forage inside. There was a little bit of room after triticale so we filled it up so much that we plugged the pipe and ended up feeding the rest to the cows. Nice how they turn that field into 2.5 windrows when it was about 18 from mowing it. Leveled it off and covered it up until winter time. It doesn’t look covered in the middle but it has some on top to keep the air from puffing up under the plastic.

New tractor battery today and discbine maintenance. There are 8 individual gearboxes on the cutterbar that should get oil changed yearly. I drained them yesterday and refilling them today. Each one has a dipstick to fill to. The book says 10 oz. Of oil in each but I’ve found 12 oz. Gets to the mark better. Of course Timmy is here!!

Saw a friendly little guy today while spreading fertilizer at Kratzerville. I don’t know who said turtles were slow but this guy is faster than most!

So welcome to the mind of a farmer. We were taking down some old fence and wanted to wind it up on a spool to make it easier to do and easier to handle afterwards. Well a skid loader post hole auger doesn’t spin that fast at an idle so bingo!! Fence winder upper!! A short piece of pipe with a hole to put a pin through and a flat piece of steel to bolt to the spool and a little welding=custom bracket. We wound up a few thousand feet in no time at all. Necessity is the mother of invention!!

So here’s a video of how the grain drill I used last week goes from planting to transport mode. Just in case some of you were observant and wondered why there was a wheel on the front of the drill just doing nothing. Union County Conservation District rents this drill out so it is nicer for them to transport from farm to farm since it is originally over 14 feet wide and folds to be only about 9 feet wide. Pretty neat if you ask me!

I sowed a new field of hay today. It should get a good start with the moisture in the soil and the warmer temperatures forecasted next week.
